The Oulu-based newspaper Kaleva has released a news item that says members of the Oulu police department have been searching for information in police personal data registers without permission. According to the paper, the police have used the police records for purposes other than police work. It has not yet been ascertained exactly how many police are suspected in the incident.
The suspicions were confirmed by Deputy Police Chief of the Oulu Police Department, Arto Karnaranta. He says criminal charges for similar cases generally include personal data offense and breach of public duty.
The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle has not received confirmation of the news from the Oulu Police, nor has it heard back from the public prosecutor’s office in Eastern Finland, the investigating authority.
