Two giants dubbed Toivo (Hope) and Kaipuu (Longing) are striding around central Helsinki on Thursday evening as part of Night of the Arts festivities.
The eight-metre wicker figures were constructed during free public events at the Espoo Modern Museum of Art (EMMA) and at Helsinki’s Malmitalo, Stoa and Glass Palace cultural centres.
Through the giants project, the French group Compagnie l'Homme Debout aims to show that ordinary ‘little people’ working together can create great deeds.
Around 7 pm, the figures left Varsapuistikko (Foal Park), passing through Kruununhaka on Hallituskatu toward Senate Square. This video shows a rehearsal earlier in the day.
The giants’ walkabout is just one of hundreds of events – mostly free – around the city and its vicinity on Thursday evening and into the wee hours of Friday. Expect heavy crowds in the city centre!
