New seasonal low: -28.9C

A new low temperature for this winter of -28.9 degrees Celsius was recorded Sunday evening in Sodankylä.

The new low was recorded at the Vuotso in the far northern municipality of Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland.  Near-record readings were also made in other parts of Sodankylä.

At Kittilä the thermometer fell to -27.6C and at Kemijärvi airport to -27.5C. The Apukka district of Rovaniemi saw temperatures as low as -26.3C on Sunday.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, temperatures in the north rose somewhat on Monday morning, but are expected to fall again during the day, possibly to a yet another record low for this winter.
