New cold record in Sodankylä at -30.7 Celsius

Against the backdrop of an unseasonably warm winter, the far northern town of Sodankylä continues to make and break national cold records this year – the latest was measured Thursday morning.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute FMI, Thursday morning the mercury dropped to -30.7 degrees Celsius in Sodänkylä’s Loka. FMI declared the reading the new official cold record for this year so far.

The previous lowest temperature had been recorded in the same place Thursday night, at just half a degree higher.

FMI said that temperatures also hovered close to Thursday morning’s cold record in Alamuonio in northern Finland, where the reading was -30.4 degrees.

So far this week temperatures have dropped progressively lower, breaking records along the way. The first came on Monday, when FMI measured the official low at -28.9 degrees in Vuotso, Sodankylä.
