Staffan storm winds blow through country, cut power

Sweden and Norway were hit by a storm, dubbed Staffan, on Christmas Day. The system has moved into Finland, albeit in diminished form. Driving conditions will be bad and power has been cut from some 7,000 homes.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) says that winds can reach up to 19-23 metres per second on sea areas this Boxing Day. Hats will also be flown inland by powerful gusts starting in the west.

Windspeeds will pick up to record figures in Eastern Finland on Saturday evening.

"Boxing Day will be windy in the entire country," FMI meteorologist Niko Tollman says. "But the wind will fall off by Sunday."

These gusty conditions are due to the Staffan storm system moving through Finland from Sweden and Norway. The storm hits Finland in diminished magnitude – it clocked 30 m/s in Sweden over Christmas – but has already caused damages.

Driving hard, power out

In Finland driving conditions will be poor on Saturday in Lapland due to snow and sleet. Conditions are also reported as poor due to frozen roads slick with a layer of water.

More than 7,000 households were without power on Boxing Day morning in South-West and Central Finland. Of the 40 municipalities affected Jyväskylä and Pälkäne had the most outages.
