New Year forecast brings winter weather to the south

Mild, snow-free conditions in the lower half of the country this winter are forecast to end in early 2016, as the New Year is expected to ring in a new era of cold temperatures and the white stuff.

On New Year’s Day, temperatures will be just a few degrees below zero, but things will get colder quickly.

Finnish residents will ring in the New Year in temperatures below zero, but a strong southern wind will up the wind chill and make the air feel colder, up to minus 10 to 15 degrees at worst. Conditions will be dry, but largely overcast.

New Year’s Day will start out 2016 with cooler temperatures, as a colder front of air will stream in over the country from the southeast. Even the southern parts of the country might get a bit of snow.

By Saturday the high pressure front will strengthen over Finland. Conditions will stay dry and the clouds will start to break up, meaning plunging temperatures. If a cold wind blows in from the east over the open waters of the Gulf of Finland, snow showers may even fall over southern coastal areas.

Sunday promises patches of snowfall over southern and central areas, as a low pressure area moves in from the east.

The low pressure front will quickly give way to another frigid front from the southeast, however, so the coming week will also start off cold. There is even a chance of more flurries starting Monday.
