Crackdown on speeding motorists

Police across Finland will start a special 24-hour speed enforcement operation as of 6 AM Thursday morning as part of a European Traffic Police Network campaign. Police forces across Europe intend to tackle speeding by conducting random speed checks.

The TISPOL (European Traffic Police Network) says that illegal and/or inappropriate speed is the single biggest factor in fatal road collisions.

With the approach of summer, Finnish police want to focus more motorist attention on driving habits. Statistics show that the largest numbers of serious speeding-related road accidents in Finland take place during the summer months.

Police will be using all available units to deter and detect motorists who choose to ignore speed limits and will focus on routes where speeding is especially risky.

Billed as a "Speed Marathon", the enforcement operation will begin at 6 AM on Thursday morning and continue for the following 24 hours.
