Police say that human bones discovered in Jyväskylä are the remains of a woman who disappeared in 2010.

The remains were discovered one week ago during excavation work in the central Finnish town, and investigators believe that in all likelihood they belong to the disappeared woman, a number of whose belongings were found lying nearby.

Police investigated the woman’s disappearance at the time and declared that there were no signs of criminal involvement. The woman was reported missing in 2012 by friends, although the last sightings of her were in 2010. The delay was due to her friends believing she had moved away from the area.

Police say the woman appears to have died in June 2010 in the same place where her body was found, which, although close to the town centre, was in an area of long grass, meaning the body lay hidden for many years.

Police announced that a cause of death investigation will follow.
