Ten thousand households in southwest Finland were without power Sunday night for an hour, after an equipment failure at grid operator Fingrid's hub in Uusikaupunki.

An equipment malfunction caused a small fire to break out in Fingrid's Kalanti electric station late Christmas Day. This triggered a blackout that began at 10.30 pm. Rescue Services extinguished the blaze and the power was restored at 11.30.

The cause of the problem has not yet been established.

The outage affected customers of the Caruna, Rauma Energia and Vakka-Suomen Voima power companies. Most of the households that were without electricity were in the Uusikaupunki city limits.
