Meat production at record levels in Finland

Finland's livestock industry is in fine fettle, according to the latest figures that show meat production running at record levels. Last year some 404 million kilograms of meat were produced in Finland, up from 397 million kilograms in 2015.

Meat production in Finland increased by some seven million kilograms last year, with much of the increase attributed to a rise in chicken wing consumption.

Figures from the Natural Resource Centre Luke show that some 125 kilograms of broiler chickens were raised and slaughtered in Finland in 2016, an increase of seven percent on the previous year.

Beef production was also up in 2015 at 87 kilos, although this was some way short of the record of 125 million kilos which was set in 1987.

Pork production, on the other hand, decreased last year to 190 million kilograms, a reduction of around one percent. The number of pigs slaughtered actually increased, but the volume of meat from those carcasses fell.

Egg production was at a two-decade high in 2016 at 72 million kilograms. Milk production, meanwhile, fell slightly to 2,359 million litres.
