Police and game management officials Wednesday called off a search for a bear in the Puijo district of Kuopio, but have asked the public for reports of any fresh sightings. Over the past week, bears have been sighted on the move in several parts of the country. One was put down as a possible danger to locals.

The bear in Kuopio was sighted in the early morning hours by a motorist crossing a highway about 5 km from the city centre. The animal was tracked by police into a woods in the Puijo district before the search was called off.
On Tuesday police shot and killed a bear in Hollola, just west of Lahti, after deciding it was acting in such an erratic manner that it posed a danger.

Over the past week there have also been bear sightings recorded in Espoo, Siuntio and Inkoo, populated areas on the south coast.
