APN Podcast: Intercultural stem cell donors needed

Stem cell treatments can save lives — but the chances of success are greatest if the donor is a close genetic match for the patient. If the patient's parents are from different countries, that match gets more difficult to find.

This week's All Points North podcast meets Paula from Tampere, a 13-year-old leukemia patient who needs a stem cell transplant.

"Well, right now there's a possible person that can donate to me. But we don't know yet. And also the doctors told us that not many people are like in my race, like my mother is from Chile and my Dad is from Ecuador," said Paula.

That makes finding a match much trickier, even though Finland is part of a worldwide network of registries with some 42 million potential donors.

We also take a look at the labour market, and ask what the implications might be from this week's seven percent pay deal. Other sectors are likely to agree similar deals now, but what about Finland's system of collective bargaining, which has been criticised in recent years?

"Most of the employers would like to agree on salaries and working hours on the company level," explains Yle journalist Hannu Tikkala.

"But this doesn't suit employees. And, of course, most of the employees would like to agree on working conditions on the national level, because then they may apply more unified pressure as a collective force. But now, we are stuck in the middle and that doesn't seem to please anyone."

Unemployment benefits are also part of the show, with one listener wondering if it's fair that she missed out on income-linked benefits.

"I feel like it kind of is unfair that if you work full-time and then you become a student then you don't get the benefit," said Amanda Mane.
