Finland's right-wing government, 2 ministers survive confidence votes

The separate confidence votes were related to the ministers' past racist comments and the government's handling of the matter.

Petteri Orpo's (NCP) right-wing government and two Finns Party ministers survived separate confidence votes on Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday, opposition party MPs sharply criticised the government's anti-racism strategy statement during a plenary session in Parliament. The plan, published last week, sets out the measures the government intends to implement in order to tackle racism and discrimination in Finnish society.

After an eventful debate in parliament about Finland's response to racism, the All Points North podcast asked this week whether the government — and all its parties — are serious about tackling the issue.

Sorry not sorry? Finland wrestles with racism

Meanwhile, the Green Party tabled a motion of no confidence in Finance Minister and Finns Party leader Riikka Purra, who this summer found herself at the centre of a scandal about racist and violent comments she had written on a blog in the past.

The Left Alliance submitted a similar motion in relation to Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman, also of the Finns Party, for previous racist statements he had written.

Regarding the confidence vote about the government, votes fell 106-65, with 21 abstentions and 7 absentees.

In a mirror result, votes for Rydman fell 106-65, with 21 abstentions and 7 absentees, while the outcome for Purra was 104-65, with 23 abstentions and 7 absentees.

An MP from coalition partner the Swedish People's Party (SPP), Eva Biaudet, abstained in the votes on Rydman and Purra, but did give a vote of confidence for the overall government.

After the votes, PM Orpo said that the debate about racism over the summer had been challenging for the government.

Orpo added that he believes the government's clear stance against all forms of racism played a pivotal role in the outcome of the confidence vote.

Regarding Biaudet's abstention, he said it was an internal matter for the SPP.
