Finland will see around 100 more police officers next year, local news conglomerate Uutissuomalainen reported on Monday.

This figure was agreed upon during the government's budget session last month, where police funding was set.

The capital region will see the biggest law enforcement boost, with Uutissuomalainen saying positions will open up in relation to population density and levels of criminal activity.

The new hires will mainly work in criminal investigation and prevention, as well as with tasks related to youth and gang-related crime, according to Tiina Pelkonen, who heads finances at the National Police Board.

In recent years, law enforcement officials have often cited a need to increase the country's current 7,500 officers. This past spring, government formation negotiators agreed to expand Finland's police force by 500 officers.
