Fallen Leaves has seen a great deal of success and accolades since its release. Among other awards, it won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated in five categories at the European Film Awards, but did not manage to secure an award.

Time magazine named Fallen Leaves as the best movie of the year.

The film also received two Golden Globe nominations, one for best non-English language film and the other for the movie's co-star, Alma Pöysti, who was nominated for best female actor in a musical or comedy motion picture.

The movie also was this year's most-watched in Finnish cinemas.

The only other Finnish feature film that has previously been nominated for an Academy Award was also directed by Kaurismäki. It was for his 2002 feature The Man Without a Past.

Meanwhile, the roughly seven-minute film Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? by Selma Vilhunen and Kirsikka Saari was nominated for a best live action short Oscar in 2014.

The 2021 movie Compartment Number 6 by director Juho Kuosmanen was shortlisted for best international feature film at the 94th Academy Awards, but ultimately was not nominated.

The Oscar nomination period runs from 11-16 January, and the official nominees are named on 23 January.
