FMI warns of dangerous frosts

Temperatures dipping below -20 degrees Celsius are expected throughout Finland for the first week of 2024.

The frosts forecast for the first week of the year are so severe that the Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued warnings of potentially dangerous weather throughout the country.

The worst weather will be on Thursday, when the weather in southern and central Finland will be downright dangerous, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute's warning map. Temperatures on Thursday are forecast to go below -20 degrees Celsius across Finland.

In Uusimaa, for example, the probability of extremely dangerous frost is 30 percent between Wednesday night and Thursday evening. The frost could cause health problems for those at risk. There is also a risk of frostbite when moving outside.

On Sunday, New Year's Eve, the frost will get worse as the evening approaches. In southern Finland, the New Year will begin between -15 and -20 degrees.

In central Finland the thermometer will read between -15 and -25 degrees. Finnish Lapland will welcome the New Year to temperatures ranging from -20 to -35 degrees.
