Rain is washing over much of southern Finland on Saturday, but better weather is in store across the country on Sunday, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

As Saturday's snow and rain showers blow over, the weather will turn mostly dry nationwide. Temperatures on Sunday range from a few degrees below freezing in the southern parts of the country to around -10 degrees Celsius in central and northern areas.

"It's sunny and below freezing — nice winter holiday weather," meteorologist Eveliina Tuovinen told Finnish news agency STT.

Clouds will again move in on Monday, and southwestern parts may see snowfall.

In the south on Monday the mercury will rise to around zero while temperatures are expected to remain in subzero territory elsewhere in Finland.

Tuesday is forecast to be dry but overcast, with temperatures potentially rising above freezing in the southwest.

Overall, the weather during ski holiday week is looking relatively mild, according to Tuovinen.

Most of Finland remains blanketed in a thick layer of snow, according to the FMI. In southern parts of the country, the snow is about 30-40 centimeters deep, 40-60cm in central parts, while depths in the northern parts exceed 60cm.
