In addition to saying that dozens of potentially dangerous individuals have crossed Finland's eastern border in recent months, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has said more than 200 asylum seekers who crossed from Russia to Finland have disappeared.
The missing individuals were taken to reception centres upon their arrival in Finland, but disappeared after registering there, with no information on their whereabouts.
The number of missing persons has increased since late January, when the Finnish Border Guard estimated that 186 such asylum seekers were missing.
"After moving to the reception centre, the persons have disappeared and the authorities have no information on their whereabouts," the NBI said in a statement.
The NBI and Finnish Border Guard have both said that documenting and tracking the large number of migrants has proven difficult.
"The increase in the number of arrivals at any one time means that the initial data on individuals is limited and not enough calls can be made, especially when people disappear for one reason or another shortly after registration," the NBI said.
Additionally, the NBI noted that there is little information on missing asylum seekers.
"The challenge is that, for missing persons, the authorities may only have access to registration data," the NBI said in its statement.
