Glimpse of spring will yield to cooler Easter weather

While Thursday was unseasonably warm in parts of Finland, the forecast predicts rain and cloudy weather for the Easter break.

The west-coast town of Rauma saw Finland's warmest day so far this spring, when the temperature reached 12.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

However, that was still much cooler than the all-time high temperature for March, which happened in 2007, when the thermometer at Helsinki Airport read 17.5 degrees.

Thursday was nonetheless a warmer day than usual in western and southern areas of the country, according to Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander.

"Temperatures in southern and southwestern Finland were mostly above 10 degrees. Temperatures in the region as far north as Oulu were above five degrees," he explained.

The same cannot be said about Finnish Lapland, however, where it snowed, with temperatures around the freezing point.

"Thirteen centimetres of snow has fallen in Kittilä during the day," Lohtander said.

Meanwhile, the clear skies in the warmer areas of the country will come to an end on Friday afternoon and evening.

"And there will be a lot of rain," he said, adding that the precipitation system would head northward, where it will turn to snow.

In other parts of the country, it looks like the long Easter holiday weekend will be rather cloudy, according to the forecast.

However the Finnish Meteorological Institute forecast calls for partly sunny skies over southern Finland on Saturday and Sunday, with highs of up to 12 degrees in the southwest on Easter.
