A few dozen protesters arrived at the Yle premises in Pasila, Helsinki, on Saturday demanding Yle withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) because Israel is participating in the competition.

Israel's participation has sparked strong criticism due to its ongoing conflict in the Palestinian areas in Gaza.

In their statement, the protesters said that Israel was using the song contest to boost its image.

Yle's chief security officer, Jyrki Guttorm, said the police ordered the protesters to leave around 10am, as the lobby is a semi-public space. He noted that the protest proceeded peacefully, without any vandalism or violence.

Yle's creative director, Ville Vilén, said the broadcaster relied on the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) discretion in participating in the competition.

"When questions about Israel started to arise, we decided within the company to trust the discretion of the EBU since this is their competition," Vilén said, adding that public votes advanced Israel to Saturday's Eurovision final.

"In many European countries, the ESC is still perceived as a singing competition. Here in the Nordics the protest [against Israel] has been greater than further south around the Mediterranean," he said.

Windows95man, the act chosen to represent Finland at this year's contest, publicly stated their opposition to Israel's participation in the competition and considered withdrawing but ultimately decided to perform.

Earlier this week some 1,500 musicians and industry professionals signed a letter calling on the Finnish public to avoid Eurovision.

Saturday's grand final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest is being staged in Malmö, Sweden. It airs at 10pm Finnish time on Yle TV1, streaming at the same time on Yle Areena.
