Finland is acquiring long-range air-to-surface JASSM-ER missiles for its new F-35 fighter jets, according to the Air Force.
Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen approved the additional procurement on 31 May, the military branch said in a press release, which added that delivery of the missiles would occur "within the Finnish Air Force F-35 integration timeline".
The Air Force is in the process of decommissioning its fleet of ageing F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and replacing it with dozens of F-35 multirole fighters.
"The range, accuracy and survivability of the weapon effect will essentially contribute to our own countermeasures to stop a potential aggressor. Apart from the other F-35 features, the current procurement will enhance our defence capability significantly," F-35 Programme Director, Colonel (Ret.) Henrik Elo, said in the release.
The Air Force noted that the US Congress authorised the missile deal in 2020.
The agreed acquisition includes the Lockheed Martin AGM-15B JASSM-ER "missiles, manuals and documentation, replacement parts, equipment, transportation services as well as manufacturer and supplier training, repair and support services in the years 2024-2031".
Two years ago, the Air Force announced the acquisition of 64 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multi-role fighters in an 8.4-billion-euro deal with the US manufacturer.
