Oulu District Court has remanded into custody a man suspected of stabbing a 12-year-old child in the city's Valkea shopping centre last week.

The suspect in the case, 33-year-old Juhani Sebastian Lämsä, attended the hearing remotely.

Lämsä made no attempt to hide his face — as defendants often do in Finnish courts — when the media was given an opportunity to take photos and video footage before the session started.

He faces two charges of attempted murder in relation to the incident last Thursday evening.

According to police, Lämsä stabbed a 12-year-old child from behind before also attempting to attack a 14-year-old, until he was stopped by a shopping centre security guard.

The 12-year-old suffered serious injuries in the attack, although police said on Thursday that they were not believed to be life-threatening.

Both children are Finnish citizens of foreign background. Police are investigating the attack as a suspected hate crime due to Lämsä's previous criminal record as well as membership of the now-banned neo-Nazi group, the Nordic Resistance Movement.

He has also previously been found guilty of pepper-spraying a Left Alliance politician in 2012 as well as stabbing a man at Jyväskylä City Library in 2013.

Oulu police said earlier on Monday that Lämsä was questioned over the weekend and had so far been "cooperative" with investigators, but they have not commented yet on a motive for the attack.

People of foreign background living in Oulu have expressed their shock and sadness following the incident.
