Police in Vantaa have released new information regarding the scooter accident that claimed the life of a 12-year-old child last week, as the preliminary investigation continues.

Based on eyewitness statements, police now believe that the scooter entered the pedestrian crossing at high speed before colliding with a car.

There were three 12-year-olds on board the scooter at the time of the crash — one of whom died later in hospital. The other two children suffered minor injuries.

In a statement released on Tuesday, police said interviews with the driver of the car as well as the two other children involved in the crash had "progressed well".

Police initially suspected the driver of aggravated endangerment of road safety as well as negligent homicide, but Detective Inspector Asko Sartanen said these charges are currently under review and may change as the investigation progresses.

"It is extremely important to find out whether the accident was caused by the car hitting the electric scooter or if it was more of a collision between two vehicles," Sartanen said in the press statement.
