Man injured by fallen tree in Joensuu

The storm front that advanced rapidly over eastern Finland kept North Savo rescue services busy on Saturday.

Traffic was halted for almost an hour on busy Motorway 5 due to fallen trees on the road.

Half a dozen large trees fell across the road just north of Leppävirta, said Aki Nyyssönen of the Varkaus fire department, leader of the team that cleared the road.

No injuries were reported, but there was at least one close call.

"A southbound motorist managed to stop three meters before a tree fell on the road," Nyyssönen told Yle.

Fallen trees caused kilometres-long queues in both directions of the highway.

In North Karelia, almost 5,000 households were without electricity.

In Joensuu, a man who was sawing up a tree that had fallen into a cabin was trapped under it. According to Lari Parkkinen of North Karelia rescue services, the man was injured in the accident.
