The Finnish Tax Administration (Vero) reported that last year, interest on past due taxes amounted to 12.2 million euros.
The tax collecting agency is advising people to pay their taxes on time. Last year, interest accrued rose by 3.5 million euros from the year before.
For some 293,000 people, the due date for back taxes is Thursday, and for 1.9 million people, property taxes are due next Tuesday, 6 August.
Interest on late payments — which amounts to 11 percent — starts accruing the day after the due date.
The Taxpayers Association of Finland (TAF) calculates that the Finnish state collected more than 116 billion euros in taxes and tax-related payments last year, including nearly 43 billion in income taxes and some four billion in property taxes.
