Hundreds of environmental demonstrators march in Helsinki

Climate action group Elokapina is planning larger demonstrations on 7 and 27 September.

Roughly 400 supporters of the Finnish climate action group Elokapina staged a demonstration march in downtown Helsinki on Tuesday afternoon.

Starting at Parliament House, the march continued along the Mannerheimintie thoroughfare and down Eteläesplanadi, towards the government banquet hall Smolna, a block away from the city's Market Square.

According to Elokapina, nearly 800 people had signed up to participate in the protest, which it said aims to end state subsidies that are harmful to the environment. Police estimated that around 400 people took part in Tuesday's demonstration.

The protest was part of the group's ongoing campaign which aims to draw attention to the topic of global climate change.

The group is planning larger demonstrations on 7 and 27 September. Elokapina is also organising protests in other parts of the country.
