Authorities have released further details about the car accident in Klaukkala, Nurmijärvi, that claimed the lives of four young people in the early hours of Saturday.
The car veered off Tulvatie, a private road crossing the Luhtajoki river, during icy conditions.
Tulvatie is an unorganised private road maintained by three property owners, which means that no road authority has been established to maintain the road, Juha Oksanen, technical director of the municipality of Nurmijärvi, told Yle.
"The property owners maintain the road at their own expense. It is outside the municipality's responsibility," Oksanen said.
Tulvatie is a narrow, winding and hilly stretch of road between the main road in Nurmijärvi, Klaukkalantie, and the new Klaukkalan kehätie completed in November 2020. There are steep hills on both sides of the bridge.
At the time of the crash, the road was slippery, and there was a downhill slope near the accident site.
"According to current information, the car slid down the hill and reversed into the bridge railing," the Eastern Uusimaa Police said in a statement.
The force of the collision appears to have caused the vehicle to spin before flipping onto its roof and plunging into the river.
No evidence of speeding or intoxication
Preliminary investigations have found no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident. Police have also ruled out excessive speed as a factor based on the evidence at the scene.
On Sunday afternoon, a diver examined the section of the river where the vehicle fell, searching for additional clues.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash at 3:51am on Saturday by a caller who spotted the car in the river. Rescue teams recovered four young victims from the vehicle, who were later confirmed deceased.
The police are treating the incident as a traffic accident and investigating it under charges of endangering traffic safety.
