Patent Ductus Arteriosus. During fetal life, the ductus arteriosus (DA) diverts blood from the pulmonary artery into the aorta (bypassing the lungs). After birth, the DA constricts & the infant's pulmonary vein circulates to the lungs directly. A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occurs when the ductus fails to completely close after delivery of the fetus. It is common in premature infants, especially those with respiratory distress. In low birth weight (VLBW & LBW) babies occurrence is approx 30%.
