The Stelae were built from 100 BC to the 300's AD. They mark the burial place of the king. Each king wanted a larger stelae than the last, the the oldest ones are the smallest. The last one built was the "Great Stelae," which measured 99 feet. All of the stelae were made from a single slab of rock, not with bricks. Obelisk of Axum, Ethiopia
