Osmunda cinnamomea (Cinnamon Fern) Cinnamon Fern, Island Garden, Plant Palette, Bog Garden, Garden Shade, Pond Plants, Fine Gardening, Fern Plant, Traditional Garden

Thriving in moist areas, Osmunda cinnamomea (Cinnamon Fern) makes a dramatic focal point in the landscape. This impressive, deciduous fern features erect, narrow spikes of cinnamon brown spore-producing structures (sporangia), which emerge from the center of the plant. Resembling cinnamon sticks, these fertile fronds are quite different from the plant's sterile, large, blue-green, lance-shaped fronds and have earned this Osmunda its common name.

Whether by themselves on the woodland floor or coming through shade-tolerant ornamentals, Cinnamon Fern fronds are beautiful when they unfurl in spring and then turn vibrant shades of gold and orange in fall. Fossil records date back 75-180 million years. This versatile, easy to grow fern is still found frequently to commonly throughout much of the Mid-Atlantic Region.
