Royal icing is what’s primarily used for decorating sugar cookies! Depending on what designs you’re making on your cookies, you will probably need a couple icing consistencies!
Getting the consistencies right is imo the most important thing you need to learn about decorating sugar cookies! 

The 3 consistencies I use in pretty much all my cookie sets are : Outline, medium, and flood. (sometimes I use a stiff consistency but usually only need it that thick if I’m doing florals) to get these dif consistencies you just add in more water to thin the icing out. I use a spray bottle of water and add in water little by little. It’s easier to add water to thin icing than it is to add powdered sugar to thicken it back up so I go in small increments!
