El Dorado

Any place that offers or is believed to offer great opportunities or wealth. The fabled South American city of El Dorado was thought to hold spectacular treasure. I bet the many people who flocked to California during the Gold Rush thought they'd ended up in El Dorado. OK, if someone insists that they hold the keys to El Dorado, that is a clear sign not to invest in their business. You need to lower your expectations of LA because you're talking about it like it's El Dorado, and not just another city where dreams go to die.

seek El Dorado

To try to find some place that offers or is believed to offer great opportunities or wealth. The legendary South American city of El Dorado was thought to hold spectacular treasure and was sought by explorers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Many people flocked to California seeking El Dorado during the Gold Rush of 1848. Far fewer actually found riches, though.
