I think he can become too protective, too smothering. Too afraid that you’re going to leave him, and he’ll be alone again, with no one to care for him–and no one to truly care for.

This might lead to him implementing rules… not that he’d say they’re rules, but you aren’t stupid. Gradually, there’s no more wandering the forest alone at night, no talking to strangers without him there, not exploring any areas he thinks might be dangerous.

If you like alone time, you might find it dwindling away; he insists you read your books laying in bed with him, never alone in your chair. He stays in bed until you wake in the morning, and insists you get up together. That sort of thing.

I think he could theoretically (in an absolute extreme case scenario) be pressed to injuring a reader to make them more reliant on him and reduce any chances that you’ll try to leave him.

He wouldn’t do it without careful, careful thought, and he’d have to really be pushed into it. You’d have to be actively saying you hate him and want to leave him, or even try to escape at some point. Or putting yourself in danger because you insist on wandering.

It would be an absolute last-ditch move on his part, after trying everything else he could to make you stop wanting to leave.

He would do something simple, like digging a hole and covering it with leaves, and making sure you stepped into it. If you break your ankle, well, that means you’ll really need him for months at minimum while you heal up. Even when it heals, you might not be keen to try to run around the woods with your newfound weakness and pain.

And if it’s just sprained, well, it gives him a chance to help you still, maybe you’ll like him more once you rely on him. (And he gets to feel less guilty if it’s just a sprain.)

I feel like he’s such a rat, he’d have a way of turning it around on you, anyway. If your cramps are this bad, well, when you’re on your period then you should be confined to your bed and doped up, right?

I’m glad you liked it! I really like that idea too, something broken and not entirely whole–too empty, too useless–becoming attached to someone who fixes them… too attached… wanting to dig their own strings into you, under your skin, keeping you there forever. Very nice.
