If this sounds like you, you could be experiencing an overuse of a muscle called your levator scapulae. 

This muscle often becomes overworked and strained when we tend to elevate the shoulder and roll it forward.

To give this muscle a break we want to activate the muscle that does the opposite movement to offload the tension you are feeling.

As a physical therapist, I often see this is due to a weakness in the lower trapezius. The lower trapezius helps to ground the shoulder blade down and back and is great for decreasing tension in the mid back and neck.
