Summary
It’s a fucking travesty. It’s an oozing, malignant cyst of a dessert. It breaks its banks when Ed cuts into it, releasing a tide of chocolate goo, which floods not only over the edges of the tray but halfway across the fucking table. Ed goes 'shit, shit', and he tries to stop the deluge with his bare fucking hand (again, exhibiting a laughable lack of foresight, insight, hindsight, all the sights). The liquid is blisteringly hot, hot enough that Ed instantly yanks his fingers back with a hiss and a litany of furious curses, and he abandons the whole fucking mess with an explosive kick to the kitchen counter.
He stubs his toe.
This is the cake’s fault.
Fuckin’ cake. Whole thing’s fucked. Well and truly.
But there is something worse than Ed’s abysmal excuse for a cake. Far worse. Unimaginably worse:
Stede thinks Ed is wonderful.
(OR: Stede showers Ed with praise every time he messes something up. Ed comes to a devastating conclusion about the reason why. Angst, fluff, talking it through (as a Two), and some emotionally healing make-up sex. For LizPoppe 💛)

podfic of Shuffling the Deck by YellowMustard

“You know I’d be perfectly glad to give you a crack at it, Ed. I’d…it’s always me. And of course, I thoroughly enjoy a…a good round of cards. But if you’d like a turn, I–I think I’d actually rather enjoy giving you the reins for once.”
And why the fuck does his voice sound so pitchy and anxious and tight?
It’s…it’s fucking solitaire.
“Just don’t think I’ll be as good at it as you, love,” Ed murmurs truthfully.
“I think–” Stede confesses quietly. “I think you’d be very good, if you were willing to give it a shot. Methodical. Careful. Gentle.”
Ed frowns. He tilts his head to try and catch Stede’s gaze, but Stede quickly looks away.
“Do you,” Ed begins, hesitant and feeling strangely wrongfooted, like there’s a conversation happening in Stede’s head that he isn’t a part of. “Do you need to be particularly gentle with playing cards?”
(OR: Stede is not talking about solitaire. A post-canon romp about quality time, communication, sex, and being brave enough to ask for the things you want.)

Summary
Ed is a wonderful houseguest. He’s quiet, and he’s tidy, and he mostly keeps to himself. He gets up with the birds, leaves half a kettle of freshly boiled water for Stede every morning, and is out of the door before Stede’s even entertained the idea of getting out of bed.
He’s also ridiculously, devastatingly handsome.
And therein, lies Stede's problem.
or: Stede gets reluctantly strong armed into hosting a friend of a friend for a week when their original accomodation falls through. Which would have been fine, uneventful even, if his new houseguest hadn't turned out to be absolutely, one-hundred percent his type.
