Two value drawing

Use these tips to develop your "artist's eye" and make the most of your value sketches.

Value is a term we use to refer to lights and darks, which are arguably the most important of all the visual elements. Without value variations we could not even see the subject - in pitch black or blinding light or even thick gray fog, for example, we see nothing.

In this next weeks drawing assignment for your sketchbooks I am asking each of you to complete a value drawing of an EGG. It should be as detailed as you can possibly make it with regards to value. This assignment should be a part of your sketchbook assignment and you will be graded separately on this drawing.

This post follows on from last Saturday's, which was the beginning of some simple exercises with cubes painted in the Munsell neutral scale. Simple in that all I've done so far is paint three cubes, but I have a feeling that it was one of the most useful exercises I've done yet with regard to tone.

Found a nifty picture by Flickr user Yusheng of some green tea ice cream. I thought it would be a nice exercise in values. 2B mecanical pencil (the lead was too fine but heck) in Canson sketchbook.
