This reception is interesting to study because, unlike the general assumption, the rejectionists are not necessarily the conservatives, and the compatibilists are not necessarily the liberals, with their respective literal versus figurative readings. Nor does it follow the general pattern, according to which the intellectuals and modernists in the Muslim world are always open to new, modern and/or western ideas, including this theory, while the traditional conservatives reject anything modernity brings with it, regarding it as a ‘“western ideology.”’ The Iranian Shīʿī reception of the theory of evolution disproves this simple generalization and binary classification, for one can observe there a very diverse landscape: two intellectual clerics with totally different approaches to the theory – one with full acceptance and the other with partial rejection –, a modern religious biologist with a complete compatibilist approach, despite his total literal reading of the Qurʾān, and, surprisingly enough, a conservative religious scholar, with a welcoming, compatibilist position. The case of the Iranian Shīʿī encounter with the theory of evolution presents, thus, a disturbing case in point, questioning any highly problematic metanarrative.

Im Folgenden erläutere ich aus nahöstlicher und muslimischer Perspektive die gesellschaftspolitisch-praktischen Folgen und-von einem religionsphilosophischen Hintergrund kommend-die theoretischen Resonanzen.

Seeking to resolve the incompatibility existing between the divine infallible foreknowledge and the human free-will, they sought to devise a theology that could be able to uphold human freedom and free will while keeping God at the centre of its system. According to their focal idea both God and the future are open, that is nothing is predetermined and set beforehand about future and since it has not yet taken place, God has no knowledge of it. The critique raised against them is that in their attempt to defend human free will and to resolve the challenge of incompatibility, they reduce the divine knowledge, hence distorting the image of the traditional God. In this contribution we seek to present a Shi’a theological model that while seeking to resolve the problem, remains loyal to the traditional image of God, hence being immune of the critiques raised against open theism.

Among the responses given, Paul Tillich’s religious symbolism is of special importance. Based on this theory all the religious statements except for “God exists” are symbols. By distinguishing between “sign” and “symbol” and regarding the religious statements as non-literal and hence symbolic, he deems religious language as ‘meaningful’ and thus responds to the challenges raised by positivists against all religions in speaking of God. Religious symbolism tries to show how the religious language could be of cognitive nature. But the problem is by accepting his pan-symbolic view about religious statements and religious language, it becomes impossible to actually and literally talk about God. Thus any way to comprehend and to communicate with God would be blocked out, and this turns his symbolic interpretation to be more of a philosophical nature and preoccupation than a theological tenor and application – to the extent of rendering Christianity devoid of its genuine content.
Comprehending this complicated theory is only possible when one would understand it within the framework of his whole theologico-philosophical system of thought.

To reach this goal we relied mostly on the literary meaning of the quranic descriptions of the celestial and terrestrial elements, along with a glance at the other preceding and/or contemporary cosmologies. It is, therefore, a comparative study which ends up in a thorough picture of the cosmos according to the text of the Quran commensurable with other ancient cosmologies, namely the Babylonian and biblical ones. The most significant outcome of this article is to cast doubt on the prevalent supposition that the quranic cosmology is nothing more than a cento of the preceding cultures, civilizations or religions. It would claim that the Quran has rather had an active and dialectic interaction with every major or minor cosmological idea of its time. Especially in a case study on the shape of the quranic firmament, it will be shown how the historical circumstances, linguistic matters, and ideological issues influenced the quranic perception of the world and/or its selective manner in gleaning the preceding ideas.

Their fight against any double standards, of any kind, in rules and regulations, that treat female body differently than the male body. In this global call, Muslim women are also included. They too want to get all their civil rights and the possession over their bodies, even those who wear "headscarf". YES, even those!
