My thoughts on Ingmar Bergman:
I have to sincerely thank Letterboxd for my introduction to the man who would become my favourite film director. World cinema was something I had very vaguely explored, I join this app and it feels like every foreign language film is highly rated, Bergman being a vocal point for those high rated films. No matter how many movies I ended up watching from this man I found myself constantly enjoying them. Firstly to touch on the actors he continuously used, who were truly top of the range and helped tell these deeply intrusive human studies, with Liv Ullmann becoming my favourite actress. The Seventh Seal (1957) was genuinely mind blowing and creative and with that being my first Bergman film and arguably his best, or at least most popular, it paved the way for me to explore more. I wrote my dissertation on Ingmar Bergman as I felt his films would be some of the best to explore and analyse. Wether it’s religion being explored in Winter Light (1963), mental health in Through a Glass Darkly (1961), or even just human morality in The Virgin Spring (1960), I personally haven’t come across a director to delve into the human condition like Ingmar Bergman. Thank you Letterboxd.
