Buns of Men

27 September 2020

I’ve concluded I’m never getting back into any kind of computer gaming. In the four years since this page has petered out I’ve:

Changed jobs.

Bought a house.

Moved.

Had carpal tunnel surgery.

Lost someone I cared about very deeply.

I just don’t have time to endlessly game these days, especially a time sink like an MMO. So this blog is being permanently tombstoned and will remain for reference only.

I’m glad to have left some sort of legacy with the GW2 Tumblr community, whether it be gifs or awful viral memes. I miss you all.

Not that I’ve become a totally mundane grown-up. My current obsessions and hobbies can be found over at Phatburd. So, if you’re interested, you can find me there.

I had an OC idea I totally had to act on.
No one ever seems to make Pakled captains, and there’s just so much potential there. And his starter ship is named Satan’s Kingdom, after the towns found in Massachusetts and Vermont. :p

USS Hokulani (NCC-96744), Caitian Atrox carrier.

Getting good glamour shots of this ship is harder than it looks. It flies like a cinderblock with depleted uranium bricks tied on. It’s murder in a fight, just don’t try any fancy flying.

“Hokulani” can translate as “Star of Heaven” and its registry number is actually the zip code of the Hokulani Imaginarium in Kanaohe, Hawaii.

I think I figured out what’s been pissing me off about GW2 lately.

A friend and I were discussing the gear grind in STO (which there really isn’t one unless you want to), when it finally dawned on me that GW2 has swapped the gear grind concept for a hero/mastery point grind.

In the dev discussion about Ember Bay, the new map coming up, there’s going to be a new mastery track to unlock, presumably mandatory in order to enjoy the new map, and probably mandatory for future LS chapters and expansions.  And I hate having the feeling of needing or being forced to log in and play in order to stay current, or risk falling behind and being unprepared down the road for when I do need those masteries.

That, friends, is basically another iteration of the gear grind concept.

I’m sure some people are excited about having another mastery to unlock, and they have every right to be excited about it. Good on them. I’m just sort of looking at it with dread and loathing right now.

And seriously, devs, skulls and lava aren’t really my thing, but why only human skulls? I’m pretty sure that charr and asura are not boneless blobs of flesh.

I’m probably going to overhaul this blog’s header and icon when I go on vacation next week. Have this to kick off its eventual reorganization.

If you didn’t see Beyond it’s not going to make much sense. If you DID see Beyond, it’s not going to make much sense. So, sit back and enjoy the Trek anyway.
