Anonymous asked: This is random but did you used to use any other usernames? I feel like your art is so very familiar but the username doesn't click any memories the way your style itself does. Chill if not though, some people stick with a username a lot better than others lol
I’ve been CanisAlbus for over 10 years, it’s the primary moniker I go by :>
But on some places I’m also Kalpeakoira, and I used to post my slightly more mature art on a locked twitter account called Koiranmaitoa.
Anonymous asked: Can we suspend canon and just friggin SMUSH EM ALL into the same universe oh and add Ear too. Delicious beautiful creatures, your brain is iso vibrant and precious.
Awh geez ;^; ♥
Many of them are situated in the same universe, just on different locations and time periods. I suspect the Vaschete storyline might not be a part of that though, since I’ve tried to keep their setting reasonably realistic and I can’t have my undead characters messing up their worldbuilding.
spark-dragon asked: Hello, thank you for sparing your lovely dogs with us! ❤️
It's sometimes hard to remember that they're your OCs and not a project for a dramatic film or book! All the trivia and world building is so wonderful to read! I hope it's nice to have so much attention on Machete and Vasco, they're lovely and deserve it. :)
I wanted to ask, are there any other OCs you're particularly attached to from your roster that you'd perhaps like for the world to see? Maybe there's someone that you wish had gotten just as much attention?
Aa thank you, that’s so sweet of you to say! It means a lot to me to hear that people find my dogs compelling ;_;
I have a lot of OCs, but I’ve been pretty laser focused on Machete, Vasco and their setting for a couple of years now. I feel like that’s the creative pursuit that is bringing me the most joy and fueling my inspiration right now. But I don’t want to view my other characters as abandoned either, I’ll go back to working on them once the right mood strikes.
Just for fun, here’s a sampling of dogs. Names in descriptions.

Anonymous asked: https://www.tumblr.com/canisalbus/777686551992942592 my immediate first thought was of vaschete naiads type beat. wintery snowmelt naiad and summery sandy beach naiad. so many people only say winter is cold and dead and frightful—who would have thought someone so warm and open would welcome him like this, cool and crisp more than biting and bitter, like a source of much-needed refreshment?
.
I would like to smell it
@canisalbus it’s your boys
Melting ice and snow meet open water and sand at Lake Michigan.
@canisalbus everything reminds me of them
woah this character is so cool i wish they were covered in blood their whole body trembling with a look of absolute horror on their face as theyre struggling to breathe in panic
aconfusedbird asked: i agree with previous anon about your boys having depth and nuance. i see a lot of myself in machete--he's not prickly because he thinks he's superior or that other people don't deserve kindness. he's prickly because he's scared every moment of his life. he has to always be on hyper-alert because in his experience, nobody cares if he's hurt or unhappy. some people enjoy it, even.
so: if i can make myself seem like someone that shouldn't be fucked with, people will automatically give me a wide berth. projecting a cold, aloof, disdainful persona keeps him safe.
and this is why he's almost a completely different person around vasco. vasco is safe. vasco has seen him at his most hurt and vulnerable and chosen over and over again to only offer him kindness and support. machete is gentle and lighthearted and relaxed around vasco because he knows vasco would never take advantage of it.
i like ur dogs i rotate them frequently
Gnawing on this comment, you put it so succinctly.
Yes, I don’t think Machete is hostile or domineering by nature, it’s more likely the opposite. But he has found his way into an environment where displaying weakness could cost him his reputation or his position. His innate nervousness has morphed into distrust and avoidance. He can’t afford to seem like an easy target. He’s very much a trapped animal, living things rarely show their best sides when they’re stressed and threatened.
(If we’re talking about the original setting, probably the biggest reason he was so insistent on becoming a priest since young age was the level of respect and protection associated with the title. He didn’t have a true spiritual calling for becoming a preacher, nor did he do it purely for the power or the wealth. But being treated with reverence, being considered someone valuable and worth keeping safe, even being seen as holy, was something he desperately longed for as a sickly kid who had been given up by his parents for being too difficult to care for. And with that role comes certain elevated dehumanization. He’s playing the part of a man who is a conduit of God, and that raises the stakes for any potential failures. He has no delusions of grandeur, he’s painfully aware of his own shortcomings, but he can’t let others see how tired, sick, lost and scared he still is. Coming across as cold and impersonal and keeping your guard up keeps the cracks in his facade from showing and the pedestal under his feet solid. If he performs his duties just right, nothing will hurt him.)
Honestly quite nervous to post this, I’ve never made nor posted art of other artists ocs
I adore machete, everything about his design is so beautiful and elegant. @canisalbus ’ art is such a huge inspiration for me, and their work is extremely comforting as well. (The colors and lines feel like a large warm wool blanket.) I’ve been wanting to draw this somber little pup for a while, hopefully I did him justice!
Anonymous asked: have you ever thought about Machete and Vasco's theoretical children? Would they even consider having any? I mean, I guess probably not if we're talking just canon universe but WHAT IF 👀
They have a theoretical non-canon child, Ear! (placeholder/nickname).
Ear would most likely exist in the modern au or in a separate offshoot of it. He would’ve been related to one or neither of them but not both, and any resemblance would’ve been coincidental.
About their feelings when it comes to adopting children, this is something I’ve said in a previous post:
Anonymous asked: in the modern au would they adopt?
There’s been talk of this a couple of times before and I’m still on the fence about it myself. I think Vasco likes the idea of fatherhood and would have children if given the choice. Machete doesn’t hate children but is strongly unnerved and doesn’t know how to deal with them. So the odds of them agreeing to initiate the adoption process aren’t promising, but if they, by some random chance, found themselves responsible for a child, it’s entirely possible they would grow very attached to the kid and excel as parents.
Vasco is natural dad material and Machete would be ‘I don’t care about children but I will protect this specific one with my life’.
(I’ve said this before, but as tempting and wholesome it is to give your otp a child, I personally don’t think that every couple needs to have a kid. It shouldn’t be a metric of how fullfilling and loving their relationship is, you can be a childless couple and perfectly content and whole as is).
and
antlermoss asked: I feel in my heart modern AU Vasco and Machete would become parents like how my best friend is convinced he will become a parent: by becoming someone’s godfather and that someone dying tragically
That’s probably one of the more realistic ways you might end up as the legal guardian of someone else’s child, I suppose.
Anonymous asked: I must confess i never really liked the dark x sunshine ship trope, but your dogs quickly became one of my favourite ships. Thanks to the story they make the dynamic seem balanced and with nuance (specially since Machete isn't some always grumpy one, at least not with Vasco)
Oh thank you! I’m so flattered to hear that!
Hearing that you think their dynamic seems balanced and nuanced is honestly a big compliment, thank you for saying that. Sometimes I worry that I’m making it too easy to boil them down into tropes or character archetypes. Now that I think about it, dark x sunshine is a dynamic I tend to enjoy myself, but ideally I wouldn’t want my guys to be just that with no further depth and subtlety to consider.
