Like the droppings boards, sand is attended to once daily. I sift the sand using a compost/mulch fork that I have converted into the world’s biggest kitty litter scoop, with fine mesh hardware cloth and zip ties. It takes less than five minutes to sift the sand and doing so keeps the coop clean and augments my compost pile with primarily nitrogen-rich droppings, not pine shavings, straw or hay. A walk-in coop is a lot easier to clean but, if you have one that isn’t, these materials, tools and tips could absolutely help you as well. The Chicken Run: ✔️ I clean the run with a dog 💩 scoop I found locally. You can also find it online (ask me where!) ✔️ The floor is a crushed granite sand. You’ll want something that is a bit coarse and not super fine. Play sand is not an option as it can harm the chicken’s respiratory system. I’ve been using riverbank sand in my coop for almost 3 years and I love it more every year. This is not play sand, but a medium course grade sand with small gravel in it. It may be called construction sand or washed sand and we get it at a local gravel company for $50 a front loader scoop!

Something a lot of people don’t know is that sand actually has a high thermal mass as long as it stays dry. If it is in an area that gets wet in the winter it can freeze. If your sand is too fine, it can cause respiratory issues for your chickens. If you can’t find something coarse like washed construction sand at your nearby home improvement store, I always have success searching for on Facebook marketplace. We found a local construction company that delivered ours, and they called it arena sand. I keep it simple and just rake the poop, and scoop it all into a bucket. It literally takes me 5 minutes and I have 47 chickens! Sand is also really great for the chickens digestive tract because It acts as a grit in their gizzard to break down food.
