PDF book preview does not work

Hello,

I have noticed that several books which I uploaded time ago can not be displayed by the Commons PDF media viewr. I have already tried to purge the file pages / cash but it did not help. Can anyone help me, please?

These are the files:

Adelslexikon der preussischen Monarchie, II. Band (L–M), 1856.pdf

File:Emilian von Źernicki-Szeliga. 1900. General-verzeichniss.pdf

File:Joannis Dlugossi Historiae Polonicae Liber XII. T. 2..pdf

General-verzeichniss.pdf. When I purge the cash, it loads the first 3 pages, but when I move forwards, the media player fails... :/ Any solutions?

77.39.172.78 22:32, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming this is about File:Henri de Rohan.jpg, (which is used to depict Henri de Rohan on several WP:s) per [1] you're right, that picture is the Cardinal. Ameisenigel, I see you were the last to edit it, do you wish to comment? It seems we should move the picture and fix Wikidata, to start with. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the depicts statement because this picture was used to illustrate the related Wikidata item. If this is wrong, then we should a) rename the file b) move the image to the correct Wikidata item and c) change the depicts statement on Commons. --Ameisenigel (talk) 11:31, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The source of the image is no longer available, but is archived here. The description is CLAUDE DÉRUET (attrib. à), circa 1627-1629 Portrait du Cardinal de Richelieu en Commandeur des armées françaises so "Henri de Rohan" appears to be an error. TSventon (talk) 15:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At least one other auction house describes this painting as a portrait of Richelieu, commander of the French army at the siege of La Rochelle, oil on paper laid on canvas, attributed to Claude Deruet.[2] The similarity of the descriptions points to a common source, which may have been the owner, who has an interest in describing it in terms most likely to attract high bids. Another auction house, which sold an almost identical painting (at an unknown date, but apparently earlier than 2022) for a mere € 1.250, offered a very different description and attribution, in which this is the portrait of an anonymous gentleman, executed by an anonymous painter from the circle of Frans Pourbus the Younger.[3] I don't know which of the two is more plausible, and possibly one is a copy of tbe other by a different artist, but auction houses, like the owners offering goods for sale, have an interest in achieving high highest bids and are not necessarily the most reliable experts.  --Lambiam 18:55, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because Commons is not an encyclopedia, We have no reason to allow change.org to be linked here. It's only used for vandalism/attack articles. Very, very few petitions are notable enough to have an article about them. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 21:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading logos of defunct retail chains for Wikipedia articles

Is it okay to upload logos I've recreated for retail chains that no longer exist? I had to browse newspaper archives to even find them as many of these chains have been defunct for many years. March8613 (talk) 18:37, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To upload them here, you'll need to confirm that they're out of copyright in the US and in their country of origin (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory); simpler logos might be covered under {{PD-textlogo}}. If the logos aren't allowed here, you can probably upload them to Wikipedia following their rules for non-free content. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 19:05, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Jmabel ! talk 18:44, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Error when trying to confirm promotion a QI candidate

Hi,

I'm trying to submit and confirm a QI candidate for promotion.

When I click "confirm", I get the following popup message "API returned error code 'missingparam' : At least one of the parameters "text", "appendtext", "prependtext" and "undo" is required."

The popup quickly fades away, but the confirm page simply hangs without actually promoting.

I also tried to add a comment (rather than promoting) to the image that I was trying to promote, but I get the same error.

I'd like to "experiment" and see if I get the same error with other QI candidates, but I'd prefer not to cavalierly submit recommendations on that page.

I can see that this error has been noted before by User:Plozessor (Commons:Quality images candidates/Archives December 17 2023), but unclear what the issue was.

Anyway, If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

Fernando Ortiz photo

Hi I would like to use a picture of the Cuban Scholar Fernanfo Oritz for his wikipedia page in english and spanish. I have found a photo that has this licence "photograph of a Cuban stamp c. 1981 with an image of Fernando Ortiz, © Mark Markau/123rf.com" that is the cover of this book Fernando Ortiz: Caribbean and Mediterranean Counterpoints, edited by Stephan Palmié, is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 https://creativecommons. org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode. I know the book has a CC BY-NC-ND licence but I am not sure about the image. The image is also a stamp so I don't know if I can use it. Dupont96 (talk) 14:01, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dupont96: Com:Cuba suggests that a 1981 Cuban postage stamp is still in copyright both in Cuba and the USA, so cannot be uploaded to Commons. Copyright in the book is irrelevant, and there is no new copyright in photographing a 2D object like a stamp.
Oritz is long-dead, so you may be able to use the image that was used on the stamp on en.Wikipedia, under that project's fair use criteria (es.Wikipedia does not allow such images). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:06, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Terrarian9111: It's the same as for any other image (or media) - is it under a compatible licence, or free from copyright for some other reason? it is this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-g5-LJ5KZM Terrarian9111 (talk) 16:01, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Terrarian9111 That video appears to have been released under a standard YouTube license, which is too restrictive for Commons. Generally, 100% original YouTube content (i.e. not a derivative work) that is OK for Commons will be licensed as "Creative Commons Attribution Required License (allows reuse)". Somewhere in the video's description (click "See more") there should be something that indicates "License: Creative Commons Attribution Required License (allows reuse)". This is actually a hyperlink to another page with more details. So, unless you're able to find something along those lines in the video's description, neither the video nor any screenshots taken from it should be uploaded to Commons, unless you're able to get the video creator's COM:CONSENT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:43, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure which type of licence I should use when uploading it to Commons. My relative is happy for this photo to be reused by anyone. Would someone have any pointers please? Lalunanelcielo (talk) 20:03, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lalunanelcielo. Does you're question have to do with en:Antonio Martinelli? If it does, then you should also familiarize yourself with en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest given you're relationship with Martinelli. In principle, you shouldn't be editing or creating content on English Wikipedia about people you're related to; I've added some information about this to your Wikipedia user talk page for reference. Commons, however, is more concerned with the copyright status of the content it hosts, and not as concerned about whatever connection you may have to said content's creator. So, if the photo you want to upload meets COM:L, there should be no issue.
The copyright holder of a photo is typically considered to be the person who takes it, and Commons is going to need some way of formally verifying that said person either (1) has previously released/published the photo under a copyright license that Commons accepts or (2) is agreeing to release the photo under such a license; in other words, Commons needs some way of formally verifying the copyright holder's COM:CONSENT. There's some more general information on this in Commons:First steps and some more specific details in Commons:Volunteer Response Team, but the best thing would probably be to ask your relative to upload the photo themselves with complete COM:EXIF data in as high of a resolution as they're comfortable with using Commons:Upload Wizard to upload the file and Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator to verify their copyright ownership. As long as the photo hasn't been previously published under a license that's too restrictive for Commons, things should be fine. Once the file has been uploaded and it's copyright status verified, the file can be added to Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:20, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2 questions regarding the public domain

(Posted this to Wikipedia:Teahouse first, hence why most of the links are red: Wikipedia:Teahouse#2 questions regarding the public domain)

I am currently attempting to determine when exactly the oldest feature-length animated films (I will add more films to this list later, but for now let's stick with the 7 listed here) will become public domain in three jurisdictions:

From my understanding, for a file to be allowed on Wikimedia commons, it is required to be in the public domain (or freely licensed) in both the United States and (if its mother country is somewhere other than the United States) its mother country. Meanwhile, for a file to be allowed on the English-language Wikipedia, it is only required to be in the public domain (or freely licensed) in the United States, even if it is still copyrighted in its mother country. (I need to know if these works are (or when they will be) public domain in Canada because I wish to caption/subtitle these works and upload them to my YouTube channel, and I need to make certain that my doing so will be legally above-board.)

In my attempts to determine the copyright/public domain status of these films, I have realized the sheer complexity of this topic. If anyone more knowledgeable on this stuff could answer these two (somewhat interconnected) questions with some degree of certainty, it would make my endeavour much more straightforward:

1. Who is/are considered the "author(s)" of a film (i.e. a work created by many people working together). Is it the director(s)? The writer(s)? The producer(s)? Some combination of these? If so, which of them? I know I've seen copyright tags on files that say something to the effect of "the last author of this work died in 19xx, so this work is in the public domain in countries with a copyright term of life + yy years of shorter", so are the authors a combination of the above people, and when the last one of them dies, then the copyright last for however many decades? If the director(s) is/are the author(s), do "sequence directors" (as listed in the credits of many old Disney films) count? Is it the studio(s)? If so, how does the "life + x years" copyright term apply, given that companies don't generally die?

2. What is "joint authorship" in terms of copyright law? In regards to the rule of the shorter term, Canada's entry here reads "Yes [Canada applies the rule] for foreign works of joint authorship, except for countries party to the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement, i.e. U.S. and Mexico". Clearly, written works with multiple listed authors would fall under the definition of "joint authorship", but if a film has one author, does the rule of the shorter term not apply to that film?

After writing all that out, I'm starting to realize that I have many more than 2 questions. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

I want to change my company logotype

We underwent a rebranding in 2019 and I would like to change logotype of our company on Wikipedia. Can someone assist me with that? Olgagod2024 (talk) 11:17, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Olgagod2024 What WP-article and can you link a page with the logo? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:00, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Olgagod2024: "Please upload the new logo as a separate file. We keep old logos as historical documents. You can edit the description to explain the reason, and link to the new logo." (per Yann)   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:08, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G., yeah, but many logos has to be en-WP locally uploaded, (unless they're very simple like File:Enhanced Games logo.jpg) assuming it's en-WP we're talking about. And if so, the old logo is not kept. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:11, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Some enwiki articles on organizations have logo etc. history sections, like en:New York Yankees#Logos and uniforms, and due to main article length there are even whole pages like en:Logos and uniforms of the New York Yankees, so I dispute your the old logo is not kept. I uploaded File:Yankees logo.png from 1913, which was used from 1913 - 1935, 16 years ago, and it survived Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Yankees logo.png.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:53, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G. Yes, but in your example, the logos are on Commons, not en-WP, because they're PD. Very rarely, if at all, will you see several non-free logos in a WP-article. IMO it's unlikely the OP:s old logo is PD, but it might be (or the very simple kind, then we can have it on Commons). But if it's an update of something like this[9], the old logo will not be kept on en-WP, it will be automatically deleted after awhile for not being in an article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:06, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: The question was asked here on Commons, so I assume the old logo is here. We on Commons don't remove old logos simply because they are old or unused.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:09, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We'll find out, perhaps. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:11, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to replace the 2020 photo on "Herbie J Pilato" with an updated photo from today. Mdw1011002 (talk) 17:34, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mdw1011002: I assume you want to use File:New NOW HJP Pic.png. I hope you are being accurate in saying that is entirely your own work. Please add appropriate categories to it.
I assume you wish to edit Herbie J Pilato, and that the file you wish to replace is File:Herbie Pilato (2020).jpg.
If you use the text form of editing Herbie J Pilato (not the visual editor) it should be very obvious what you have to change. Look for "image =". - Jmabel ! talk 19:07, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For those who walking along the rail tracks, I would like to understand why they are tourists?

This picture shows a group of people walking along the rail tracks. And they seemed like pedestrians, not tourists. Even so, the file mover still agreed to rename it to new title: "Tourists walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge to Pingxi Station 20130213". I was confused because I started to wonder if I had misunderstand the word "tourist". For those who walking along the rail tracks, I would like to understand why they are tourists. Can anyone explain?--125.230.84.133 17:32, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also, this: File:Tourists walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge 20130213.jpg.--125.230.84.133 17:36, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do we need to rename this two files again? For example, File:Tourists walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge to Pingxi Station 20130213.jpg move to File:Pedestrians walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge to Pingxi Station 20130213.jpg.--125.230.84.133 17:42, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can this possibly be important enough to waste any time thinking about? - Jmabel ! talk 19:09, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
File:Tourists walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge to Pingxi Station 20130213.jpg was previously called "2013-02-13 tourists on the Pingxi Line.jpg", so the filemover didn't add the word "tourists". And File:Tourists walking on Sankeng Creek Steel Bridge 20130213.jpg has never been renamed at all. So I think you'd need to ask SSJF01 or Solomon203, who uploaded the files and chose the work word "tourists". --bjh21 (talk) 19:22, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The ownership of the copyright is mine because I am the heir of the author. Vadillo19 (talk) 13:36, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vadillo19: Why then did you claim this as your "own work" and self-licensed? That has really confused the matter. You will need to go through the process described at COM:VRT or COM:VRT/es to clarify that situation (explaining who you are and what is your relation to the artist; the correspondence will remain confidential). Once it is sorted out, you will need to attribute the work correctly, and in the intention is cc-by-4.0, you need {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}}, not {{self|cc-by-4.0}} - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Jmabel ! talk 18:50, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel:Si , le pedí a un bot (ChatGPT) para que hiziera una obra mía,pero antes de publicar a Wikimedia es posible agregar "own work"? AbchyZa22 (talk) 19:00, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- Jmabel ! talk 08:39, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel:Que significa "prompt"? AbchyZa22 (talk) 10:16, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LianIsland: I'm going to guess you tried a cross-wiki upload, possibly of a low-resolution image or one lacking EXIF data. Try uploading directly to Commons )Special:UploadWizard or Special:Upload, and please provide your full-resolution version of the photo. If you prefer a retouched version, upload that to overwrite the original (but don't do that just to make it smaller, we want the full resolution)! For an example of what I mean about retouch/overwrite, see my recent File:Nicolae Tonitza - Katiuşia Lipoveanca (1926).jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 08:43, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LianIsland: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:24, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About uploading pictures

What about the competition arranged by weeki loves monument? Rasinka334455 (talk) 14:40, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rasinka334455: your original question did not mention a contest. Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Bangladesh does not mention any prizes beyond a certificate and the possibility that for all of Bangladesh ten photos will be submitted to the international WLM. Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2024. https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/awards/ indicates that, from that international contest, ten people in the world will win substantial prizes, ranging from an "up to €300 in in-kind prize" to an "p to €2000 in in-kind prize".
There will be thousands, probably tens of thousands, of participants worldwide, and ten will win prizes of value. If participating is it's own reward, great, but unless you are basically a professional-level photographer, I would guess that you should not have a serious expectation that one of you pictures will be selected as one of the ten best pictures in a world-wide contest. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
