Welcome! I'm Heartshaven (she/her)

I'm a big Doctor Who expanded universe nerd, so if you're looking for analysis and discussion about the Whoniverse, you're in the right place.

I also do reconciliation of different Doctor Who EU stories. If you two (or more!) Doctor Who stories that contradict each other, I would be delighted if you would send them to me so that I can figure out a way to reconcile them within the Whoniverse. I've linked some of my reconciliations right here - please do check them out!

My big large-effort Doctor Who EU reconciliation essays:

(two quick notes - one, not every reconciliation is gonna be that long. Those are just the ones I am proudest of. And two, the audio story The Kingmaker contradicts way too many things even I am not touching it)

Plugging different parts of the Who EU:

Other things I wanna share:

Almost everything on this blog is either a post I made or something I have relogged with a reply. If you want to see reblogs that I don't have anything to add to, check out @heartshavensreblogs.

I love interacting with fellow fans, so feel free to leave comments or asks! And that's basically it! Welcome to the blog - I hope you have a good time here

If you know what's coming, it's impressive how much the shadow of the future hangs over Neverland. A future where Romana is Imperatrix and trying to wipe the Daleks from existence? I'm just saying.

Do you have any theories surrounding Lolita (the type 101 tardis)?

Lolita is a place where the line between "theory" and "just taking what gets said at face value" is a little fuzzy, so not entirely sure how to answer this.

Lolita is The War King's first Tardis, and if the War King is the Master, then that makes her the Master's first Tardis - which would be the Tardis he lost on Terserus during the events of The Two Masters, just before The Deadly Assassin. He's using Goth's Tardis after that for the rest of the classic series.

Lolita isn't related to any of the other humanoid Tardises - those were created and then retroacted into Gallifrey's history by Compassion - and is functionally a random element in the War.

I don't think Lolita is the Enemy. (I personally think the Enemy isn't of Gallifreyan origin at all, but that's another story), I just think she's a very dangerous rouge element early on in the War.

If you don't think the enemy is of Gallifreyan origin, then where do you think it's from, if you don't mind me asking?

@dougielombax also asked me about what I think the Enemy is, so...

I personally don't think it's fun to nail down much about what the Enemy is - the fact that it doesn't get nailed down is one of the things I like about Faction Paradox. Something powerful enough to alter Skaro's history to create the Daleks under Gallifrey's nose. That being said, I have come to several conclusions about what the Enemy isn't.

The Enemy is not:

  • A result of a direct action Gallifrey took outside of their creation of History as a concept
  • A singular entity
  • From the dawn of time (since if it was, it would be just another Great Old One and the Enemy is something different)
  • An abstract concept
  • Something that "exists" in the History and physics systems that Gallifrey created

To answer elec's question more specifically, I think the Enemy originated in the future beyond Gallifrey's noosphere. Beyond that, no real clue.

I feel like too much focus goes to thinking about River in relation to the Doctor and not nearly enough to analyzing how deeply messed up her childhood was

There should be more stories about that

If you want some EU recommendations...

The Big Finish R&J actually touches on this. It's not the focus of the episode, but there is talked about and given a sweet moment.

The Diary of River Song series 3 goes into how fucked up Kovarian is as a parental figure.

Aaaaaaaaaand the short story Student Bodies explores how messed up River's time at Luna University was, since the Silence were just hanging out in her peripheral vision.

The Quin Dilema dedicating like half an episode to Six and Peri having a real heart-to-heart about their relationship and how he had mistreated her at first but she stuck around because she knew he needed her and she wanted to help him is actually so good it might drive me insane

OH MY OTHER YES!

The Thousand Year Thaw is such an important part of the Doctor and Peri's relationship that I'm flabbergasted it took almost 40 years to get made, but it was so worth the wait

Uhhhhhhhhhh I'm sorry for someone who is such an EU expert, my knowledge of fanfic (which is what I think you are asking about) is basically nonexistent. I know that @riversofmars writes a lot of Liv/Helen fic so they might have some of that? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful

these days, if you want an unpopular classic who serial to love, you're gonna have to try harder than the gunfighters (unironically really good) or the time monster (silly, but fun). i think fan consensus has really turned around over the last ten years for those two

I have a bizarre fondness for Underworld, a story I don't think anyone really loves but I feel could've been good or even great had the budget not run out.

Doubt there's anyone else but me who likes Underworld but given that both The Gunfighters & The Time Monster used to be placed down at the deep bottom of fan listings and are now well-regarded by some fans, perhaps opinion will change about that story, too (unlikely but you never know...)

i don't love underworld, but i also don't think it's an exceptionally bad story by any stretch. maybe one day...? my personal soft spots for stories i don't think are particularly well-loved, though, are probably robot (i don't think it's hated, just not particularly liked), and silver nemesis, which i actually really love

I feel like Four to Doomsday might be mine, if anyone is curious
