Here’s something fun and affordable spotted this week at the #TwelfthFret in #Toronto: a 1981 #Fender #Bullet.

Designed by the legendary #JohnPage who went on to co-found the #FenderCustomShop, and now builds guitars under his own brand name. I know my friend @gavinhornsey is a big fan of these #guitars and owns at least one of them!

I’m STILL not at #NAMM, so here’s a 1975 #OlympicWhite #Stratocaster instead!

I’m not usually a fan of the ol’ 3 bolt neck and #bullet #trussrod ‘70s #Strats, but this one was really pretty and not too heavy at just under 8 lbs. It’s also hard to argue with a #maple #neck on #Olympic #White. Also fascinating is the #polyurethane finish…the back of that neck is every bit as shiny as the day it left the factory. I’m so used to the feel of #nitrocellulose on vintage (or #Relic) #Fender necks, that when you switch to a poly neck the difference is REALLY noticeable to the touch. Visually, of course, it’s a 41 year old neck on which the finish could have been applied last week! Poly is SO much more durable than #nitro, which is one of the reasons they started using it (the other being that it is easier - and therefore cheaper - to apply than nitro!), but it does kind feel the back of your neck is coated in a layer of plastic! :D

This lively #guitar is available for purchase at @folkwaymusic in Waterloo, Canada.

Here’s something you don’t see every day…or in my case EVER!  ;)

It’s a 1986 Squier Bullet.  Made in Japan of course, as Fender did not make any guitars in the USA in around 1985/1986.  When CBS sold them the factory was not part of the deal…so for the two or so years until the new factory was ready, only Japanese-made Fenders were available.  And this is one of them!

At only 250 clams it was VERY tempting to bring home and screw around with.  But I didn’t buy it. I’m saving up for an early 60s Epiphone Coronet…

Here’s the final bit of fun from last eek’s trip to Capsule music in the Queen West area of Toronto:

  1. Fender Bullet!  Early 80s.
  2. Lefty of the week (for my friend guitarlust!):  it’s a recent Les Paul in a lovely red with cream binding.  I’d like to be more specific about it , but I didn’t look at the tag and I can’t find it on the Capsule website!  Maybe that means it’s free??
  3. A gorgeous Gretsch G6128TCG Duo Jet in Cadillac Greem.  MIJ, $1,900.
  4. 1970s (?) Les Paul Bass.  Again…no lookee at tag, no findee on website…
  5. Bottom left: 1960 tweed Fender Champ.  $1,250!
  6. 1930’s Volutone lap steel & amp outfit.  Under $500.
  7. Les Paul “Recording”.  These come up every now and then…and I barely understand the concept but they have low impudence (sic) pickups…or high impudence (sic) pickups…supposedly for recording direct into a mixing board or something?  I am not sure…I may have missed the point completely and would appreciate a reply from anyone who understands what this all means!   And yes, I know the word is “impedance”, not “impudence”.  I like the impudence of using the word impudence incorrectly,  so save your condescending lectures for someone who REALLY doesn’t know what they are doing!  :D
  8. This is the best of all:  a 1965 Jajuar refinished in black.  The fun is not so much in the guitar - though it is nice.  The fun is in exactly who it is on hold for.  Who?  Here’s a hint:  he is a Canadian producer, and he is well-known for producing such bands as Veruca Salt, The Cult, Motley Crue, Metallica, Bon Jovi…and MANY others.  If you’re still not sure, here is one of his own songs from the early 80s with his band The Payolas:

And now back to our regularly schedule program, already in progress:

Guitar EXPLOSION #2:  Capsule Music Toronto.  http://www.capsulemusic.com

  1. Two refinished 1967 Epi Casinos (left), and a couple of nice Gretsches
  2. 1980s Fender “Robin Ford” model
  3. 1970s Guild S100
  4. 2012 AVRI ‘65 Jaguar
  5. Lake Shore Road heading east towards downtown Toronto.
  6. This one is for my friend Justin Dean Thomas of The Bowery Riots in NYC.  I love the Billy Bo Jupiter..and he’s got one of 'em!
  7. 1967 SG Special (front) followed by a Robbie Kreiger signature, a VOS “Custom”, and a 2009 Custom Shop VOS SG/LP reissue
  8. Hahaha!  Early 80s Fender bullet!
  9. Around the corner from Capsule Music.  Strachen Ave south of Queen.

Here is something you don’t see very often…a Fender “Bullet”.  My “Gruhn’s Guide to Vintage Guitars” says it was made in the USA from Korean parts, and introduced in 1981.  The “E1” serial number confirms the year.  It’s kind of funny looking, but for 399 what the hell!
