How did you spend your Thursday night? Was it as educational as mine?
I spent last night getting a serious #history lesson on early #Gibson #flattop #acoustic #guitars from Gibson #historian and renowned #vintageguitar #repair and #restoration authority, Mark Stutman (seen here demoing an early ‘30s “#tuxedo” #L00) the self-styled “Big Cheese” at the famous @folkwaymusic in #Waterloo, Canada.
Mark kept the shop open late and delivered an in depth presentation to a crowd of guitar nerds like me on the evolution of Gibson flat tops beginning with the late 20s #L1 (aka the “#RobertJohnson” guitar) through the Depression, pre-war and war years.
My key takeaway, and the thing that kinda blew my mind was hearing how quickly the designs changed in the early days as the #luthiers in #Kalamazoo struggled to build guitars that would not just fall apart. And how they were kind of “winging it” all the time…constantly varying stuff like wood thickness, brace design, shape and size, bridges, bridge plates, etc. etc. There was a lot less consistency in the design and build of these #guitars than I would have expected! A LOT less… 😂

This one-off #Henderson #replica of a 1930s #Gibson #CenturyOfProgress was very generously lent to my by my friend @michaelsegui. Personally, I wouldn’t let a #guitar of this caliber out of my sight for a minute, but Michael is a very trusting guy. I wonder how long it will take him to realize that I substituted a “Serviceman”-style knock-off in the case when I returned the guitar to him?? ;)

I don’t usually go mental for #acousticguitars, but this one is the size of a ‘30s #L00 (and I LOVE small body #acoustic #guitars!), so beautiful and sounds so good that I am making an exception in this case, and so I am, as a result, completely marble-less!
You maybe familiar with #Wayne #Henderson’s work through the book “Building #Clapton’s #Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument”, because he has, in fact, built a guitar for reasonably popular #guitarist by the name of #EricClapton! Now that, my friends, is pretty impressive!

Here’s where I was today. Paradise (A.K.A. @folkwaymusic in Waterloo, Canada).
Front and center is a lovely 1934 #Martin #R18 #archtop, and just to the left of it is a 1937 #Gibson #L30. Also dig the incredible, immaculate, 1957 #Gibson #SouthernJumbo (with the “hold” sign on it, at left), and my fave new acoustic lately, the #Collings “#Waterloo” model (black with white pickguard, far right. Wait…a guitar called “Waterloo” in a city call “Waterloo”…what are the odds??), which is basically a reissue of a 1930s Gibson #L00. And I’m sure my good friends at @retrofret of #Brooklyn, #NY, will appreciate the 1925 #Washburn #StyleA, with all it’s fancy #filligree and whatnot (far left, bottom)! There’s also a couple of #vintage Martin #Dreadnoughts in there somewhere… :D

A pair of #vintage 1930s #Gibson L0-something-or-others seen at The #TwelfthFret, Toronto. I’d like to be more specific about the model names (they’re probably an #L00 or #L01), but I read a book about Gibson #flattop #acoustic #guitars that said even experts have trouble telling L0-something-or-others apart!
I don’t often go mental for acoustic #guitars, but one of these…preferably in black with the “#firestripe” #pickguard as seen here…is definitely on my list of future acquisitions.

Wait…#L00? Or #L01? Or #L02? Apparently even Gibson experts have trouble telling these models apart! Don’t even get me started in the #Hawaiian versions. :D All I know is that there is nothing cooler than a vintage black L with #firestripe #pickguard! OK, maybe a pre-war #Martin O-18…or 1-18. Any tiny Martin #guitar works just fine for me!

Started wet sanding today.
Just using micro mesh. After the first three grits when I didn’t sand through the finish, I realized I’d be good. Seven hours of this today.
I’m finished for now or you’ll see a picture of me like Jack Nicholson in The Shining… from all the shining.
Just a bit more on this one and it will be all ready for the bridge.
