Here’s a rock n roll history lesson courtesy of Hamilton, Canada, guitar player and collector @alfiez1.
This is a 1935 #Rickenbacher* #ElectroSpanish. This is not a #lapsteel…it is, however, considered to be the first ever commercially produced #solidbody #electricguitar. It was made entirely of #Bakelite which was an early type of plastic that you may be familiar with as the material that early #Fender pickguards were made of. This example has been re-necked (the original Bakelite neck crumbled, which Bakelite was prone to do, and why Fender stopped making pickguards out of it!) but is otherwise original. Alfie told me he does actually use it for gigging. 82 years young. Fantastic.
*n.b. I did not misspell Rickenbacker…when the company started out they used the original German spelling of the family name… “Rickenbacher”.
