It deals with the motif of hardening within the book of Isaiah. It integrates speech-act theory with rhetorical criticism, relates hardening to "connective righteousness" and the aspect of communication and elucidates the significant role it plays for understanding the message of the whole book. Main passages include Isa 6; 40; 42-44; 48,1-11; 50; 56,9-57,2; 58-59; 63,7-64,11.

In the first part he introduces the »poetological approach« to the Psalms and discusses the effects of a canonical approach to the exegesis of the Psalter and its Psalms. These approaches are exemplified in studies of individual Psalms in the second part and of collections of Psalms and their theology as well as of tradents in the third part. These studies show how fruitful it is to correlate exegesis of individual Psalms, inquiry into their interrelationships within collections of Psalms and the illumination of their historical setting. The anthology is concluded by a study of the Psalms’ relevance for pastoral care and several sermons on the Psalms, all of which indicate the author‘s primary goal, which is to combine academic interpretation and church practice in fruitful ways.

It is argued that the ‘king’ in Zech 9:9–10, the ‘pierced one’ in Zech 12:10 and the ‘shepherd’ in Zech 13:7 are in their literary context neither one single messianic figure nor constitute a single traditio-historical development. Only the announcement of the eschatological king in Zech 9:9–10 takes up the tradition of the Davidic king and contributes some significant changes that highlight the identification of the future Messiah with the people. This might be due also to an integration or allusion to the suffering Servant of Isa 53. The ‘pierced one’ in Zech 12:10 is interpreted as a prophet and victim of the conflict between true and false prophecy and the shepherd in Zech 13:7 as a leading figure that dies in the course of his leadership together with large parts of his people. These interpretations are substantiated by a brief note on Zech 11:4–17. The final paragraph sketches the impact of these interpretations on the perception of messianic texts in the Old Testament within the twofold canon of the Bible.

The passage contains an alternation between speech about YHWH and speech of YHWH, which is interpreted as a merging of the voices of the Servant and of JHWH. Looking at the passage as a means of communicative action, it does not convey the idea of YHWH taking over the Servant’s mission instead of him, as it is sometimes suggested. Rather, the passage mediates the implementation of the Servant’s mission. In the course of this interpretation the central role of Isaiah 51,1–8 within the discourse on righteousness as well as the communicative strategy of Isaiah 40–55 comes to the fore. Moreover, this interpretation leads to some considerations on the methods of exegesis, some reflections on the place and nature of Biblical Theology and on the Servant character of the ministry of preaching.

Among them, he raises the issue of integrating diachronic studies and narrative approaches. Moreover, while previous evangelical contributions to pentateuchal studies often had their focus on aspects of unity, Uhlig indicates the merits of acknowledging and integrating the diversities in a narratological approach. He concludes with some hermeneutical reflections that interrelate also with other disciplines of theology.
