Removal of material at Amateur Athletic Union
I see you blocked User talk:12.228.62.50 for removing material inappropriately from Amateur Athletic Union but the same problem has occurred twice again but by User:Dorazior.[1] I have reported this at Talk:Amateur_Athletic_Union#Unexplained_removal_of_material but I don't know what is the best thing to do next. Can you help? Thincat (talk) 15:33, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I replied at the article's talk page. I have the page watchlisted now, if the blanking continues it will be dealt with it accordingly. -- Ϫ 03:28, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Tain & District Field Club
Hi OlEnglish from snowy & cold northern Scotland. I just want to ask why you deleted the page dedicated to TDFC.
I am a first timer at article creation so there may be some problem I don't recognise.
As an organisation we certainly thought TDFC warranted an entry but you possibly can elucidate why this is not so.
edit: Maybe I am wrong in assuming you did perform the deletion - apologies if so, and how do I find a way forward. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Muymalestado (talk • contribs) 16:00, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Phil —Preceding unsigned comment added by Muymalestado (talk • contribs) 15:58, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Phil. I can assure you I did not delete the article, I just moved it into your userspace as a draft where you can continue working on it. You can find it at the link User:Muymalestado/Tain & District Field Club. As I mentioned in my reply to your Request for feedback, the article is not appropriate for Wikipedia as it is much too promotional in its current state, among other issues it basically looks like a brochure instead of an encyclopedic article. You should also be aware of our Conflict of interest guidelines--if you're related to this organization you're discouraged from writing about it yourself (precisely because of the promotional editing as evidenced in your example), if the organization is notable you can rest assured someone will soon write about it. Being a first timer you may also want to read WP:My first article and WP:Writing better articles for some guidance. The best thing is to compare with other existing established articles on the same subject and try to follow their layout and style. Once you feel you have sufficiently improved it, post another query at WP:Requests for feedback and someone will take another look at it. You can receive more help at the Wikipedia:Help desk if you need it. ps. It is also snowy and cold here in British Columbia, Canada ;) -- Ϫ 04:16, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Welcome picture on my talk page
Hello OIEnglish, I would like to put the same picture on my English page that I have already on my German page and French page. Its a 360° panorama picture of my native town Freiburg. The problem is, that I dont know how to put the right file description, they change from languag to language. Do you understand what I mean? Regards Cruks (talk) 09:49, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

- Yes absolutely. I am thankful for your help. Regards Cruks (talk) 21:06, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
Thank you
Thank you for the kinds words and the barnstar! I've been doing some casual wikification work lately, but am not likely to return to the orphanage. TBH, my Wikipedia work is a way to feel productive doing something semi-mindless, and it's much too frustrating when the hard work one puts in to clear out a 6-year-old backlog is met with nothing but complaints and reversions from people who don't want orphan tags on "their" articles. -- Avocado (talk) 13:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Page Help
Ol English. I was working in the orphanage and found that two articles are the exact same The Hatchet Warrior and Anybody Killa I was wondering if I would select one for deletion or if I should mark them as to merge the articles. They are the same hip hop personality. Thanks for your time. --molestash (talk) 19:37, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there, sorry for the rather late reply. It looks like "The Hatchet Warrior" was indeed an exact duplicate of "Anybody Killa". In cases such as this you should just redirect the newer created article to the existing old one, adding the tag {{R from duplicated article}} after the redirect code. I have done this for you. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and feel free to ask me any other questions you may have. Regards, Ϫ 14:08, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Random Page Patrol
I have a simple editing question about something that keeps coming up as I wander around.
- The article Andrew Stevens contains the sentence...He is the only child of actress Stella Stevens and her former husband Noble Herman Stephens, both natives of Mississippi.[1]
I think a comma is needed between husband and Noble. The result would read... ...her former husband, Noble Herman Stephans, both..... At the same time, (I'm not sure why) but I don't think a comma is needed between actress Stella Stevens. What I am searching for is a guideline for future use. Thanks.Buster7 (talk) 19:08, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, I see what you mean.. the comma would signify that pause in speech one would make after reading the word husband. I don't know for sure what the absolute grammatically correct way is, but I think both ways may be right. However, to me personally, when looking at the sentence on the page, ...He is the only child of actress Stella Stevens and her former husband Noble Herman Stephens, both natives of Mississippi. looks more correct without the comma. I'm not sure if the Wikipedia Manual of Style covers this specific situation, but WP:COMMA might be of some guidance. To get a definite answer, I suggest asking the grammar gurus over at the Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language. Regards, Ϫ 14:33, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

About {{Recent changes article requests}}
I noticed that in situations which others do not ask substitutions for blue links on the template and just mention the existence of blue links, you just remove them. That's not appropriate as there are still many notable topics which do not have independent articles (e.g. science of science, engineering studies, censorship in Greece, censorship in the Netherlands and experimental animation). You should instead find blue links and search for red links on links, disambiguation pages, navigational templates, Wikipedia:Requested articles, Wikipedia:Missing encyclopedic articles and substitute them for red ones.--RekishiEJ (talk) 11:41, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I will make sure to remember to do that. Thanks! -- Ϫ 13:40, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia Ambassador Program
Hi! Thanks for signing the Online Ambassador interest list. We're gearing up for the next term right now, and the Wikipedia Ambassador Program will be supporting considerably more courses, with considerably more student activity... possibly upwards of 500 students who will need mentors.
If you're still interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:21, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

OlEnglish, I noticed you put a "too many categories" template on the article Barber's pole. You may be right.
I am not an admin, and don't have a grand overview picture of the workings of categories in Wikipedia.
Of course, one man's 'trivial' use is another's 'material.'
All I was trying to do was maximize the links and the basically get readers to know that the article exists, so they can decide the relevance. I like to think that it is a perfectly fine and useful article, and if readers don't know of its existence (e.g. WP:Orphan), they won't have a look and can't make such a decision for themselves. I am continually amazed at the length, breadth and scope of articles that shed light on various subject matter. The key is to have something that jogs your intellectual inertia off a given path. (I am not suggesting that this is an orphan, but was using that only as an analogy for purposes of discussion.)
I encourage you and other editors to have at it. Also, it might be worth discussing on the articles talk page, or alternatively worth recruiting someone else who specializes in the workings and effects in categories to have a look at it.
One of the problems that exists is the lack (as reflected on the talk page) or various project groups that might be interested in this article. If we could find them they might offer some guidance. Those are just some thoughts on the subject.
Best to you and happy editing. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 13:20, 19 December 2010 (UTC) Stan

Hello, thanks for your Christmas wishes. I want to create on my user page a playing ground or test page. Can you help me to do it? Happy new year 2011.--Cruks2010(talk) 06:32, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi OldEnglish, the above page was deleted and there is a discussion going on. I have seen that you put some corrections into the Isabel dos Santos article. Kento Holding is not, rpt not, a Portuguese company. Its a company of Malta and Isabel dos Santos is 100% owner of the company. All her business activities within Portugal and with Portuguese companies go under the name of Kento Holding.--Cruks2010(talk) 13:19, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oh okay. I dunno I was just trying to link it from somewhere. -- Ϫ 13:24, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi OldEnglish, I have a problem, my article of Kento Holding was deleted. That is ok, but then when I started a discussion on the Kento Holding discussion page, as it was suggested, and when I put the "Hold up"-mark into the page...there were no reactions from the deleting people. The person who deleted the article is a German administrator...running around English Wikipedia. I would say that this behaviour is vandalism, yes. On the other hand side, the German & Portuguese articles on Kento Holding were not deleted. Very very strange. What do you say about these facts? Do you have an idea and could you help me to restore the article, at least to keep the duscussion upright. Regards.--Cruks2010(talk) 15:23, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- It looks like it got deleted before you had a chance to place the hangon template. What happened was you created a new page with just the hangon template and that got deleted as a blank page because all it had was just the hangon template. Have you tried discussing this with the deleting administrator? You also have the option of posting a request at WP:UNDELETE to get it restored, but I would suggest recreating it but this time adding more information on notability, such as mentioning why this company is notable. -- Ϫ 15:29, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Exactly this is what I have done on the discussion page, which then was also deleted. This is awful. Nobody cares. Just swept away. The company is a holding of Isabel dos Santos the richest woman in Angola. And there are many reports on corruption in this country. I have seen other articles which dont have any importance. Why the German and Portuguese have not been deleted? I asked the administrator, but no response yet.--Cruks2010(talk) 16:46, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Protection
Hey OlEnglish, thanks for catching this – I had to go to sleep. But did you intend full protection on that page? Semi would work just fine, no? --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:43, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- No prob. The full was a quick decision just as an extra measure of precaution out of concern for the intensity of the trolling. Because of the amount of edits the account was making I wanted to make sure it wasn't reaching autoconfirmed or didn't already have an autoconfirmed sock, based on the threats of further block evasion. It's only set for a day but you're free to lower it to a semi if you want. Btw, do you know if it's possible to set full protection to automatically expire down to a semi? -- Ϫ 18:41, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think it is. But that makes sense. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't an accident. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:44, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the help...
...but I have been doing some thinking and I think I'm about ready to pack it in, this time for good. I had a horrible experience back in August where I was being stalked across multiple wikis by a disgruntled user; another long-term vandal decided to join in the fun. The last thing I want to do is to play stupid games with some asshole (there is really no polite way to put it) over this or any other wiki site. I am a volunteer as are we all and there simply isn't any incentive to continue to be abused like this. Besides, I'm starting to do things which are proving to be more profitable and I need to pay more attention to them. Again, my sincerest thanks. Take care and perhaps we'll meet again. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:27, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Then they win!! It's only abuse if you feel abused. What you need to do is just not give a fuck about these immature bedwetters. You don't need to play any stupid games, just revert, block, ignore, you know that's how we deal with trolls. Keep doing your more profitable thing, but don't give those clowns the satisfaction of seeing you leave because of them. Otherwise they'd win and you'd lose and then Wikipedia would lose out on another much-valued editor. -- Ϫ 23:42, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
I know; that's why I swung by for a moment. I wanted to thank you and a lot of others for watching my talk page and reverting this naughty little boy. Unfortunately, he's still at it. Believe me, he isn't the reason...but he is a symptom. He simply made me rethink my priorities. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 16:45, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

why is the directly typed url showing the header for other people which should be shown only if users come through a redirect !

this header should appear only when the user gets redirected for searching "Tendulkar" right ? but why shows on all cases ! you got what i meant ?

- Yes I understand what you mean and yes that's normal. The header (known as a hatnote) shows for everybody, regardless of how the user arrived at the page. These messages are not part of the MediaWiki software which Wikipedia runs on, they are not dynamic. They are static templates such as {{redirect}} for example. -- Ϫ 14:57, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Frank Dux
Can you please review the Frank Dux discussion page? I'm trying to present some evidence to buck up claims to help edit the page and a user Niteshift36 seems to have a conflict of interest with Mr. Dux. They both served in Desert Storm and could very well have a personal vendetta given Mr. Dux's role during this conflict and certain prior covert operations. I have actual testimony obtained from military officials backing up claims that Dux was in fact where he was at those times. Everything that is being presented can be validated through the LA county court records. The page should be revised to show that the defemation claims against Mr. Dux by SOF also had ulterior motives as far as discrediting someone for financial gain. I have more documents and sources but at this point I am reluctant to continue posting as this person attacks me with sarcasm before I even get started as a user here on Wikipedia.
Thanks,

- I wasn't in Desert Storm. Didn't say I was. Of course, I doubt Dux was either. Niteshift36 (talk) 18:47, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there, welcome to Wikipedia. I'm sorry your first editing experience has been a less than positive one. You may find that when discussing controversial subjects, some editors tend to be quick to get into an argument. You just gotta roll with it, learn when to step back and take a break, and try not to take things too personally, Wikipedia is not about winning.
- I don't know about the conflict of interest thing.. seems kinda tenuous to me. Either way, there's nothing really I, as an admin, can do about it. Nightshift36 seems to have a genuine interest in the subject, as do you, and I hope you two can make some sort of progress in your discussions. Just stay focused on ways to improve the article, rather than throwing accusations back and forth. If you still continue to have problems with other users then there are steps in dispute resolution you can take, WP:Wikiquette alerts is one.
- If you have documents and sources that back up Dux's claims then by all means present them! It would certainly help the article. Keep in mind that to avoid original research, sources must be reliable, secondary references ideally published in mainstream publications. -- Ϫ 19:40, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your time, I have noticed that reliable secondary mainstream publications have been disallowed on the discussion page in the past due to baseless accusations that Frank Dux owns the magazines or is affiliated with the author etc etc etc. Going through the history it seems as if certain individuals are stone set on disallowing anything to support Frank Dux. Niteshift36 has even posted comments as such on the discussion page namely "I believe Frank Dux is a fraud". This is diverting from a neutral standpoint as is making the progress of adding/supporting extremely difficult. Phoenix2923 (talk) 20:55, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- I understand. Have you tried voicing your concerns on the Neutral point of view noticeboard? You may be able to get some outside opinions from uninvolved editors there. Also the Reliable sources noticeboard is a good forum for discussing whether a certain source could or should be used. -- Ϫ 21:00, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I will try that. Phoenix2923 (talk) 23:29, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- Whether I believe he is a fraud or not has no bearing on the reliability of sources etc. By that line of thinking, an atheist couldn't edit an article on Christianity or a Jew couldn't edit an article on Islam. Niteshift36 (talk) 00:13, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Believing that he is a fraud makes you quick to point fingers. That's all I'm saying. It is making it difficult to be constructive. If you were truly neutral you wouldn't use sarcasm with me nor would you be "skeptical" of me based on my geographical location. That's not unbiased behavior. Phoenix2923 (talk) 01:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
The Savannah College of Art and Design abuser
Hi, the IP 98.82.126.141 (and associated addresses) continues to make outlandish, biased, and uncited revisions to the Savannah College of Art and Design page. Four just this morning. I've undone the changes and wonder if you can protect the page? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_College_of_Art_and_Design
Thanks for your help, and I'm happy to do whatever I can to assist.
Jasonmparker (talk) 17:39, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've protected the page for a month, after which time the protection will expire. I also blocked the IP for 72 hours because they've began editing in the same pattern on another page, although I believe it's a dynamic IP address so I'm not sure how effective that will be, still, if the disruption continues, there are other measures we can take. -- Ϫ 18:50, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that your name was on the Wikipedia:Hyphen luddites page but you've not included yourself in [[Category:Wikipedian Hyphen Luddites]]. That can be done by adding the category to your user page if you wish.Trilobitealive (talk) 16:17, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I totally forgot about that group! Thanks for reminding me.. But hmm, I think I'm in enough categories as it is. I'm gonna pass on adding the category for now. -- Ϫ 17:59, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Online Ambassadors
I saw you have been really active lately and I clicked on over to your user page and was pretty impressed. Would you be interested in helping with the WP:Online_Ambassadors program? It's really a great opportunity to help university students become Wikipedia contributers. I hope you apply to become an ambassador, Sadads (talk) 00:21, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've been thinking about it and I'm seriously considering it. I've hesitated only because I worry I won't be as available to fully accommodate those I'm helping. -- Ϫ 08:26, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Concern
Since you're an administrator, I wanted to ask your opinion on a trend that I noticed with another editor today. This editor, Cohee, seems to be creating pages that violate WP:NOTE. I don't think their edits are malicious and I don't know if they're even familiar with this policy but several pages that he/she has edited or created goes against this. For example, Horace Thompson Carpenter is an article about a man with a successful career as an illustrator. The problem is that's all the article says. There is nothing in the article about why he's amazing or what makes him more notable than any other successful illustrator. This is why I don't think Horace Carpenter meets notability criteria. Richard Cromwell Carpenter was an architect, John Stilley Carpenter was a Mormon elder, John Lingo was a monk, and St. George Society of Philadelphia is some kind of association for people of English descent. I don't see anything in these articles that is notable enough for mention in Wikipedia. Cohee has been editing for three years so I feel like he/she should be aware of what counts as notable and what doesn't. I purposely didn't challenge Cohee and leave a message on their talk page about it because I don't have any authority to stop it. Also, I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with their editing habits. I just think they're violating policy. Please skim through the articles above and make a judgement call. They're all fairly short so it shouldn't take too much of your time. //Gbern3 (talk) 16:38, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there. Sorry for the rather delayed response, I just haven't been feeling very well lately, and not wanting to take on any responsibilities. :) (sigh, where's those handy talk-page stalkers when I need 'em! ;p) I don't know what to say about those articles you mentioned, they all look well-sourced, and that's usually an indication that the subject is notable, but of course I don't have the sources here in front of me to verify them. As for John Lingo, Cohee seems to give a reasonable defense of the article's notability on his talk page, but not being knowledgeable in those subject areas I don't really feel qualified to judge. My advice to you would be that if you have concerns about notability you should either tag it with the {{notability}} tag or nominate it for AfD. You mention that you "don't have any authority to stop it", that's not really how it works. You don't have to be an administrator to enforce Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, as a community we're all responsible for the content in Wikipedia, and if you think an editor is violating a policy or guideline you certainly should (politely) mention it on their talk page. I should also mention that WP:NOTE isn't a policy but a guideline, so technically he's not violating policy. Checking his talk page and contribution history I see there's possibly some copyright issues and concerns about not using edit summaries, but nothing so egregious that would require admin intervention at this point. To reiterate, I think your best bet is to nominate said articles at WP:AfD, or restate this same overall concern you have at the notability noticeboard where a wider community of editors can look-over these articles. Hope that helped. -- Ϫ 02:54, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, your advice does help. Thank you. //Gbern3 (talk) 13:35, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Contents pages navigation proposal
A proposal to add topical links to all of the contents pages has been made. As part of that proposal, the navigation bar at the top of these contents pages would look like this.
Please respond to the proposal, Portal talk:Contents#Adding topical links to contents pages navigational headers and footers, as you see fit. Regards, RichardF (talk) 13:46, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
noticed that you deleted Armis Game
ironically, I saw the phrase 'assume good faith' on the previous page, so I thought that would be a good place to start this message.
Armis Game page was obviously butchered, however to delete it out of hand, and without a fair hearing, or proper improvement clearly did not "assume good faith".
Although the author of Armis Game owes the Wikipedia community an apology for trying to push a message, I also think you also owe the community an apology for casting negative judgement on a subject without looking at or looking for proper documentation on the subject matter.
IMO, you should have demanded that the author improve the work instead of deleting it.

- Well, my decision to delete was based on a lack of assertion of notability, but you're right, perhaps I was a bit hasty with the delete button on that one. Although I wouldn't say I didn't assume good faith in this case, but rather was a bit bitey. As usually I would tag articles first and let another admin review it. I'm guessing you were the one who posted all those questions on the talk page, I must admit that just reinforced my decision to delete, but on reflection it would have been better to let the user attempt a reply. You're free to take this decision to deletion review if you like, or you can ask to have the article restored at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. -- Ϫ 03:17, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
