Ummm ...

Uh, I sort of thought someone would kinda "welcome" me to the community. But, what the heck.

Welcome!!!

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia!

Never mind about people not welcoming you yet. It took 6 months before someone noticed that I hadn't been 'welcomed' (see User_talk:DonkeyKong64).

I'm not a very prolific contributer to Wikipedia - in fact, almost all my contributions are either minor edits (formatting, spelling, grammar edits), or suggestions/comments on talk pages.

I am also interested in philosophy, as well as being scientifically minded (I am a mathematics student). Also, I love talking to thoughtful people who have perspectives that are different from my own. As an agnostic/atheist from a generally left-wing background, I would love to learn about Hinduism and right-wing philosophies.

Well, I guess that's all I've got to say for now. If you want to reply to me, leave a message on my talk page. And have fun editing wikipedia! DonkeyKong64 (Mathematician in training) 07:08, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure how one is supposed to handle discussions like this. I guess i'll continue the discussion on my talk page, and post a message here every time I reply on there. Otherwise we will get hopelessly confused. That is assuming the discussion keeps going, which it may not, but anyway...
I am now going to my talk page to reply to your post. DonkeyKong64 (Mathematician in training) 23:03, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I didn't end up replying like I said I would. I've been busy recently... I intend to reply at some point when I get around to it. :P DonkeyKong64 (Mathematician in training) 17:10, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

हिन्दी / िहन्दी ???

i would like to point out here that the correct spelling of HINDI in devanagri script would be िहन्दी and not हिन्दी (with choti-ee-ki-matra (ि) on ह and not on न). ANANT SINGH अनंत िसंह 08:06, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

other templates for hindi

edit

thanks for replying. kindly refer to the other templates for hindi (hi-1 to hi-4). hindi is spelt as हिन्दी. is it the correct spelling in devanagri script? i don't think so.

my userboxes are fine. i don see any dotted circle below the ee ki matra...i'm using firefox only. i dunno what the prob is. the way hindi is spelt in hi-1 to hi-4 is appearing to me as HANIDI! i guess the hindi fonts are screwed up over the net.

i've spelt it the right way man. it appears correct to me (i mean, i wont spell my own surname wrong)...i suppose the indic languages are not installed on my comp. i'll check those and see. ok...have done that. will see what the prob is in my computer. regards. Thank you so very much for the barnstar for my work on the Jat people page. I have been thrilled to find that there are a number of people out there appreciating what I have been trying to do to - it has been lonely and disheartening at times wrangling with the fanatics. Hopefully now, with the help of the Administrators and some level-headed contributors the page will become an interesting, useful, and factual account of Jats and their history, something all Jats can be proud of. You have made my day - thanks again. Sincerely, John Hill 22:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help with Wikisource

edit

Dear ReluctantPhilosopher! Can you help me with transliteration of Devanagari (to UTF-8) on German Wikisource-Page s:de:Seite:Nanak der Stifter der Sikh-Religion.djvu/13? If you need the context, I can translate the German in English. --Balû 07:44, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

(Copy of Message on Balu's talk-page) Yeah sure, but you'll have to do the translation into English first... ReluctantPhilosopher@Talk 08:42, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The sentence with the first Devanagri reads: "This motivates Rae Bular to impress Kalu, father of Nanak, who disrespects his son because of his moony nature, that his son is a great man and that he gots exalted through him (here is the Devanagari) which make no sense to Kalu, who halfheartedly answers, that only god knows gods matter.
The second sentence: The family regards him as mad and starts to lament about this bad luck (Devanagari, says the original text).
Can you now transliterate the Devanagari? --Balû 17:43, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
It reads "Ehu mahapurukh hai kalu tu bhi nihal hoa". Is that what you wanted me to do? ReluctantPhilosopher@Talk 03:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The second sentence reads: "Tab sara parvar sabh kutumb vediyaan ka laga jhuran aakhan lage jo vadaa haif hua jo kalu da putra diwana hoa". I'm less certain about this second sentence as it's a very old dialect of Punjabi; I transliterated as it appeared to sound to me. ReluctantPhilosopher@Talk 03:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
no, that's not what I wanted. In Wikisource we write the original text from scanned pages in wikitext, so I need the Devanagari-text here in the wiki, sth. like this: उपयोजक. Do you understand me? --Balû 05:36, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey

edit

Yea my userboxes do exhibit contradictions. I don't particularly believe that Hindutva or the BJP are fascists in practicality, as they do not exhibit the features fascists from history do in that they are democratic, they do not believe in seizure of state power, they are culturally nationalistic whereas all fascists are usually racially nationalistic and I really don't expect Rajnath Singh to be the next Francisco Franco. I also exhibit a personal belief that Hinduism is very special, that Bharat is the Hindu rashtra and that revolutionary conservatism is required to preserve the outstanding Hindu culture/religion which has survived so long under so many oppressions, hostilities and massacres suffered by its members. Why did the Gujarat riots affect you, there has been no proven links to the BJP also the fact that Congress instigated more mob violence in 1984. In my opinion a larger quantity, so to speak, of equality will exist under Hindutva in India than the anti-Hindu bias and pseudo-secularism that is prevalent at the moment and largely accepted by everyone. Hindu workers are butchered in my home state of Kerala by machete armed Marxist or Islamic mobs (like Gujarat riots in smaller scale) relatively frequently with the Marxist government and the media turning a purposeful blind eye to the situation, and I expect anti-Hindu violence to be prevalent elsewhere in India but in smaller amounts but never well documented and suppressed by pseudo-secularists. Also Hindutva law reform will make the legal system more equal in its treatment of everyone, though it is justifiably tailored to the majority Hindus. I think we can objectively say that India under secularist Congress is no means egalitarian, perhaps it is in the formal sense, in which case it can also be said Hindutva shares a few features with defined Fascist ideology (anti-communism, cultural nationalism) but similarly in some amount all right leaning parties in that way share elements with fascism, it is just reverse simplistic McCarthyism used by the left, but yes, you cant pinpoint Indian secularist political ideology with not supporting equality (despite the actual reality). I am slightly biased in favor of Hinduism who I believe to be without equal among current religions and much more than religion and I feel offended and disrespected that Hindutva is likened to fascism. I will not let my personal beliefs into Wikipedia however, unless I can find sources to support it of course. India is unique, has a unique situation and Hinduism is special to me, for the rest of the world I support formal equality, so there I admit I am a bit of a hypocrite but exceptions always exist. B Nambiar (talk) 11:36, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yep, two wrongs don't make a right. Though it is important not to judge Hindutva by the actions of BJP, the Gujarat pogroms and some Hindu mobs, violence isn't a part of Hindutva and I am not happy to hear that speakers on Hindutva reminded you of fascism but not surprised. Yes Hindutva does involve dehumanization of the other i.e Muslims, but rather dehumanization of foreign ideologies more precisely, but dehumanization of the other is obviously necessary to push Hindu nationalism just like smoking is made to be considered harmful to reject it, it is logical. Hindutva claims especially by Sri Sita Ram Goyal, are very logical. The fact is that increasing foreign influence in India diminishes Hindu culture/religion(Hindu rashtra)and reduces the rights of the majority, and more instances of anti-Hindu activity result such as terrorist attacks and mob violence. Based on past events it can be said Hindus cop it much more than they dish out, and anti-Hindu bias is so prevalent and easy to add to that Hindus barely react to it and suffer the bias, with the ones standing up to it criticized as extremists too simplistically. The possible results of Hindutva is not too dramatic, a quick change of divisive laws which can be abused, the rightful recognition of India as the Hindu rasthra, more liberal economic reforms, more proactive diplomacy in international matters and hopefully removal pseudo-secular bias in education and an easy to view and acted upon position on terrorism. Negative externalities will result with Hindutva, human nature, but it occurs as a result of all types of politics. At least with Hindutva it will be more overt, than hidden ulterior motives hard to place in other types of political ideologies. Again Bharat is special, from an objective standpoint I claim, and for unique India, unique Hindutva is my political choice and unlikely to change. I believe I agree with what you have said and can still justify my views. Hindutva will not lead to gas chambers by any means, the situation and ideology is much different, though it might change immigration patterns. You believe human rights are under threat with Hindutva I gather, to which I think that human rights overall will improve in India, as a result of less anti-Hinduism, although it is likely that minorities will lose some human rights. Just to add, I have faith in Hindutva(BJP) economic policy and human development index largely correlates with per capita GDP, with the exception of Kerala strangely, so I believe Hindutva should overall benefit India more than other political parties.B Nambiar (talk) 14:21, 20 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I see you're an Indian who has done a lot of work on Indian politics and the Indian National Congress, so I figured you'd be the right person to ask for help. Speedy deletion of Ostrolenk, Faber, Gerb & Soffen

edit

A tag has been placed on Ostrolenk, Faber, Gerb & Soffen requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Hi Amit!

edit

Thank you so much for your welcome note the other day. Sorry I have been so long to reply but I have not only had guests staying with us for the past several days - but my back has been really bad and I am in bed most of the time and only able to work on my computer in short bursts. I am waiting to go for an operation soon - I see a surgeon next week who will be referring me to a neurosurgeon and then I should discover exactly when they will have to fly me down to Cairns for the operation (our nearest city of any size - about 350 km south of here by road). I must admit I am not looking forward to having my back operated on - but I have no choice - I can't walk more than about 50 metres at the moment and am in pretty constant pain. (I tell myself I deserve it as I must have been really naughty in previous lives!)

About the Jat pages - I have been pleased to see that there seems to have been much less racist propaganda being posted on them recently and the quality, generally, seems to have improved - so I haven't felt I have had to wave that vandal-whacking stick about that you so kindly awarded to me - which is a relief as I really hate fighting and arguing with people! Although there have been a number of minor on-going arguments between various editors about whether there are more Jats in Haryana than anywhere else or that the numbers of Jats in Pakistan keeps getting wiped - I really don't feel this is my business - nor do I have any reliable information on such matters. I do keep a regular eye on various pages dealing with matters pertaining to Jats in case there is any resurgence of racist vandalism - but am really pleased I haven't felt the need to intervene recently - I do hope it stays that way.

I am working hard trying to get my big book on the early history of the Silk Routes off to the publishers before I have this operation - so I have been doing less on the Wikipedia recently. What are you up to? I do hope you are well and having fun! And may I once again thank you for your kind support in the past which really helped cheer me up when I was feeling very alone dealing with some rather unpleasant characters!

I send you my very best wishes from Down Under,

Cheers, John Hill (talk) 23:52, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Amit!

edit

Thank you so much for your kind note. The back pain is pretty constant, unfortunately, and sometimes severe, and my poor wife, Jo, is having to do almost all the chores around our home as I am really limited in what I can do. Also, I am pretty constantly on codeine and other drugs. Have been to see my GP and a surgeon again about possible operations to my back but the picture is gloomy - especially as my spine is riddled with osteoporosis (which means it is very brittle) and I have several discs in different regions of my back which are damaged and it is difficult to say which most urgently need attention. I am due to see a neurosurgeon soon - but I don't expect he will recommend surgery unless it is really necessary to prevent further damage. Fortunately I can usually sit up in bed with my laptop fairly comfortably for several hours each day and I have been working as quickly as possible to get my first book ready for publication. I am getting close now and am beginning to feel really excited! By the time I do this work, though, I really have to lie down and so I am making many fewer contributions to the Wikipedia these days. I notice you are "retiring" from the Wikipedia - but I hope you don't give up on it altogether.

I send you my best wishes and do hope we can keep in touch from time to time.

All best wishes,

Proposed deletion of Tarja Kallio-Tamminen

edit

The article Tarja Kallio-Tamminen has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The subject of the article does not meet any of the notability criteria as outlined at WP:ACADEMIC

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

edit
Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

What's New?
Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of WikiProject India. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 2 – (July 2010)). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

edit
English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

edit

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:24, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
