Official language of the Sahrawi republic

[edit]

On the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic a recurring issue going back over years is that some editors insist on including Spanish in the info box. This would be fine if Spanish was an official language but it is not: Constitution - Article 4:La langue arabe est la langue nationale officielle.[Trans: The Arab language is the national official language (no Spanish!)]. I am dropping you a note here because you previously edited this article and not many people are bothered with it so perhaps you could participate and help put down these attempts to include inaccurate information...Thanks. 109.76.199.226 (talk) 09:05, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bird categories

[edit]

Hi: Can I ask what your ultimate goal is in adding various species to "Birds in..." categories? Are you planning to add all species to all country categories? Because otherwise it's going to be misleading to readers. I notice that you started with Iceland, but have only put 47 (of 370) species in the category before moving on to Panama, for example. And for species like the Osprey, which is found in virtually every country in the world (except for a few in the remote Pacific) that list of categories at the bottom of the article is going to be enormous! Wouldn't readers be better served by the "List of..." articles? (List of birds of Madagascar, List of birds of Iceland, List of birds of Panama, etc.) MeegsC | Talk 13:36, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1999 UNAM strike

I removed the two categories you added to the 1999 UNAM strike; the so-called "strike" was actually a student blockade of the campus (a "huelga estudiantil", or "student strike"), and not a labor strike or dispute. Magidin (talk) 21:39, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Germans in New Jersey

[edit]

It's unclear to me based on the contents of Category:Germans in New Jersey that the category groups anything meaningful together. My research of available data shows that there are Germans in every municipality and unincorporated area in the state, as well as in virtually every one of its churches. Category:German Frisian people

Hello there. I see that you created some new Frisian categories and so I'm wondering if we should generally put Category:East Frisians into this top category "Category:German Frisian people". This means that it may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Please note that articles which do not meet these criteria may be merged, redirected, or deleted. Please consider adding reliable, secondary sources to the article in order to establish the topic's notability. The article Kashubian American has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced, I am not seeing any sources on GBooks or GScholar

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. African people of British descent - the former "Anglo-African" category

[edit]

Hi,

First off - let me iterate that I find some of your latest edits quite disturbing. You seem intent on dismantling the former "Anglo-African" category and replacing it with neat little subcats, by which all the biographies therein can be included. I have some problems with this:

  • 1. You aren't even reading the biographical articles, apparently. You're just scanning them for a suitable subcat and adding it. This is nothing short of folly. For example, John Edmond or anybody else shouldn't go under "Zambian people of British descent" because I just got done reworking that cat a month or two back. It's divided into two other subcats: "Zambian people of English descent" and "Zambian people of Scottish descent" (ie Edmond) which the articles should be placed under.
  • 2. Not all Anglo-Africans can simply be packaged into a neat little subcat like you want them to be. Dawkins, although he was born in Africa and has traveled there extensively, for example, has never held Kenyan citizenship or identified as being "Kenyan". Accordingly, while we can call him an "African" in some sense of the word, we cannot possibly call him "Kenyan". Same goes for a colonial (and there were many of these cases, I know several personally) from the old British Central Africa. Born in Nyasland (Malawi), raised in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), emigrated to Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), acquired Southern Rhodesian citizenship which meant nothing in 1980, fled to South Africa at independence. You can call them a Malawian person of British descent, since they were born there, or a Zambian/Zimbabwean person of British descent, since they lived in both during UDI, or a South African person of British descent since that is their current residence. Most of them will simply tell you they're an "African" rather than identifying with any one country, because they didn't differentiate between the three former Federation colonies and moved around quite a bit. Others will still identify as being "Rhodesians", but since they emigrated at Zimbabwean independence their Rhodesian passports have expired and they have never held Zimbabwean citizenship. Few such individuals will identify as "South Africans", since they moved there relatively late in their lives.
  • 3. Don't call people like the Australian MP "Zimbabwean people of British descent". They're African people of British descent, and white Rhodesian people, but if they were born there, left at age thirteen, then came to Australia and now hold Australian citizenship, "Zimbabwe" likely means nothing to them and never will. They would still be Africans, however; a substantial number of such expats continue to identify with Rhodesia as their birthplace. Completely different from living on the continent all their lives as a white "Zimbo".

Please do not categorize Europeans of Jewish descent as being of Asian descent. Most of these families have lived on the continent of Europe for many centuries, if not millennium. Unless they have moved to the Middle East in the last century, I believe that most Europeans of Jewish heritage have only a distant biological relationship to this area. They can be considered European, not Asian. Liz Read! Talk! 18:05, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bosnians in St. Louis

[edit]

Thank you for contacting me! Are there articles that discuss the groups as being part of the same sub-set of ethnicities? I wonder if the literature associates them together or not. It might help do name it "from the former Yugoslavia" or "Balkan peoples" then. Thank you for all your contributions pertaining to the subject Haiti. We need more contributors like you. Keep up the good work!

I am currently working to expand the dialect of French in Haiti called Haitian French, similarly to the current subjects available noting the French derivatives (example: Swiss French, Belgian French, African French etc). Right now, I believe the article is being unfairly challenged for deletion. The point of the article is to make a distinguish between "Haitian Creole" and "Haitian French". Many people are led to believe that "Haitian French" is the creole spoken in the land, but fail to understand that the French is in fact French and carries an accent in the way that many French countries carry as well. I've sourced it pretty heavy and think it is a good article but it is still a work in progress. If you would like to pitch in on the discussion as to why or why it shouldn't be deleted the talk page is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Haitian French. Your input would be much appreciated! SJ

Koreans in Baltimore and school districts

[edit]

I thought the article on "Koreans in Baltimore" was very interesting reading! I noticed it stated that many Koreans moved to Howard County.

Howard County Public School System has several languages on its website, with Korean being one of them. For that reason, I requested from the Korean Wikipedia that somebody start a stub on its school district, so now we have this: ko:하워드 카운티 공립학교 시스템 - I had also requested an Urdu article, and personally started the Spanish and Chinese article.

It's important to have these U.S. school district articles in other languages to help non-English speaking parents learn more about their communities. WhisperToMe (talk) 06:20, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Isleños

[edit]

Hi! Yes, I believe it is a good idea. I had thought in make it before, but I was not sure in if this was correct. That not only would serve to shorten the article, but that the Isleño communities in Texas and Louisiana are descendant of Canarian settlers who arrived en time very different (1731 and 1778 respectively) and almost they have not no relation between them. They are different communities, although they are of same origin. So, each article would study each Isleño community.

Cajuns and Creoles

[edit]

Thanks for asking! Whether to make one or two articles is something I usually decide depending on what kind of sourcing I have (how does the sourcing classify the groups?). Personally I consider the Creoles and Cajuns as two separate groups (Cajuns come from the Acadiana region (Lafayette, Louisiana area) while Creoles live in many places, including New Orleans.

So far the info on the Creoles in Houston are those who are of mixed African and European descent but are considered "black" in Houston (Percy Creuzot become the "Black" Colonel Sanders) and this has to do with the "one drop rule" being applied to those with black ancestry, so the info on the Creoles so far is in History of the African-Americans in Houston. Cajuns are considered "White" in Houston.

Hi Solar-Wind. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Atlanta's Wikipedia:Meetup/Atlanta/Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. We are expanding the LGBT Atlanta, Georgia pages. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --tdempsey (talk) 06:59, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on Middle Eastern ethnic groups

[edit]

Thanks for the message. I will see if I have time and sources to help some day.

But will not support articles about Maronite diaspora outside of the Middle East, since we are first and most ethnic Lebanese (Semitic mixtures of Phoenicians, Arameans and Arabs). We already have article about our Lebanese diaspora. Within Lebanon, the structure of the political system requires this division but outside most of us see our society to be only Lebanese and therefore connected to Lebanon only.

From my connections with Copts from Egypt, I can say with certainty that most Copts see themselves to be only Egyptians and connected to Egypt only. In this way the Copts are similar to us, Maronites.

For the Druze (even though not ethnically different from the rest of the population within Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, they see themselves to be separated society), Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac (possibly these 3 need separate articles, since there are significant disagreements if they are one group or not), Berbers, Jews and other groups it is OK to create diaspora articles. And if I can I would help for these articles, except for Maronites and Copts.

great categories

[edit]

I really appreciate your addition of Category:Persecution of Assyrians and Category:Persecution of Yazidis‎

What are your thoughts on a rename to something like Category:Anti-Assyrian discrimination and Category:Anti-Yazidi discrimination? What do you think might be the best last word?

I'm thinking of the best way to add to Category:Discrimination and possible inclusion to the footers of articles like ISIL‎.

Proposed deletion of German-Russians in Nebraska

[edit]

The article German-Russians in Nebraska has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No meaningful content. It's just a title.
